High School Magnet Report

Decent Essays
My high school was a magnet program that offed Heath Science and Technology (HST) courses. I had the oppertunity to take Pharmacology, Pharmacy Tech and clinical. I learned that there are many different drug classifications, different ways to administer it and different names. In Clinicals Rotation, I had the pharmacy for a week. It was at St. Joseph's Hospital and while shadowing I got to observe interesting machines and how the pharmacist made some of the drugs. During my senior year of high school, I took Pharmacy Tech. and our class did Kaduceus. Kaduceus showed me the math, how to read a label and decode a doctor's prescription for a patient.

Throughout the two high school visits, the reoccurring theme of history and its role in the formation and development of public schools was reflected in both schools’ visions and goals. Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School was formed due to the integration of Pearl High School, a school that was majorly African American, with Cohn High School, which was majorly Caucasian, in 1896 (“Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School”). Additionally, Hume-Fogg Magnet High School is the junction of Hume High School and Fogg High School in 1912 (“Hume-Fogg Magnet High School”). Both of these mergences relate to the ruling in the Oliver Brown v. Board of Education case (1954), stating that “federal courts were to ‘enter such orders and decrees consistent with this opinion as are necessary and proper to admit to public schools on a racially nondiscriminatory basis with all deliberate speed the parties to these cases’”…

An educational learning rotation with the FDA will also help me to get a good overview the FDA’s daily activities and their research programs. As the Selection Committee is reviewing my application, I do not believe I have ever been at a disadvantage of any sort, but I do believe there are factors that set me off from other applicants. For instance, since 3rd grade, I have been part of our School District 54’s Magnet Program. This program is for those student who aren’t challenged enough in their regular classes and require a more rigorous academic program that is better suited to their needs. In order to qualify for the Magnet Program, it is essential that students do well on standardized tests (scores must be in the 98th percentile or higher), as well as cognitive ability tests, such COGAT and WISC-IV. After taking these tests, certain students are selected to partake in the program.…

Preparing for this exam was unlike any other exam for me. I have recently accepted a job at Easter Maine Medical Center, as a nursing tech, and the hours of orientation have been challenging to balance with my studies. My new job has required even greater time management than I have previously implemented. I worked a thirteen-hour shift the day before the exam, worked immediately after the exam, and then completed an online midterm for my socio-cultural nursing class that evening. Although I have not received my exam grade, I felt very prepared and confident due to my strict time management.…

As a member of Health Occupations Students of America, I competed in dental terminology in the interest of diversifying my knowledge of the medical field and made it to state-level competition. I also joined a rigorous Pharmacy Technician Certification class and interned at CVS, an experience that taught me to work fast and in an organized fashion, be social with colleagues and customers, and teamwork skills such as assisting a customer or answering phone calls for co-workers. These responsibilities taught me to make use of time and be more social. This environment was amazing to me because I had always wanted to understand how a pharmacy is managed. In the end, I passed the state exam to become a certified Pharmacy…

In my first semester of college, I have been exposed to so much and I have learned so much. Learning Basic Medical Science has allowed me to learn a variety of new things that I had never even heard of before or done before like immunohistochemistry, solving case studies, and T1/T2 translational research. Immunohistochemistry was really interesting and complex. At first, I overlooked it because I thought it was my over my head and not applicable to me at the moment. Then, over time I noticed that we talked about it several class periods, so clearly it had some significance to us currently.…
