In the closing chapter of Hayes, Baruth, and Kessler’s Literacy con Cariño, the authors reflect on the factors that cause immigrant students, such as the ones Robert taught, to fall behind in school. They also focus on what Robert did to combat those issues so he could instill a love of literacy into his class. Through ongoing textual dialogue, published work, and Robert’s confidence in them, the students transformed from the timid children they once were to avid readers and writers. After writing her article “Darkness Too Visible,” Meghan Cox Gurdon delivers a speech responding to the critiques that have been refuting her article. In her speech, “The Case for Good Taste in Children’s Books,” she expands on her original claim that young adult literature is becoming “increasingly lurid, grotesque, profane, sexual, and ugly” and that children should be guided away from these books and led towards those that make “aesthetic and moral claims” (Gurdon). Gurdon delivers her claim phenomenally by countering opposing statements, using valid examples and analogies, and using ethical standpoints. Children are often seen as living in a bubble, innocent and untouched from life's harsh realities. Therefore, in order to explain difficult topics to them, it is common for adults to use animated, witty stories in hopes of protecting the child's pure outlook on life. In both “A Barred Owl” and “The History Teacher”, Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins allocate explanations to children in hopes of protecting them from what is really at hand. In “A Barred Owl”, Wilber uses the animations of the owl to bring ease to a frightened girl while Collins uses stories and play on words to distract the students from the tougher reality in “The History Teacher.” Both poets use literary devices to display how adults white lies can sway a child's perception despite having good intentions.…

As Ralph Waldo Emerson has once said, “Fiction reveals the truth that reality Obscures.” Fiction can make us see the bigger picture in situations that are problematic and improve our skill to analyze difficult circumstances. The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge, shows how money can’t solve all your problems and how there can be many more problems then what their eyes perceive at the surface. Despite the school board’s recent sentiments regarding the lack of value that fiction provides, fiction should remain in the school’s curriculum due to its ability to educate young people in diverse ways instead of a single approach. At first when I was told we had to create this literacy portfolio. It really didn’t make sense to why I had to pull a student who was below grade level out of class to complete this assignment. Once I read APS 7 and saw how I could use the portfolio to help me help my students, it started to make sense. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject.
