Reflective Essay To An AP English Course

Originally, coming into this course from having taken AP English (allowing me to skip English 101), I had an embarrassingly false sense of security about my writing. Although high school was valuable, as it taught me how to concisely put my thoughts together and make a cohesive essay, I was often writing rhetorical analyses or synthesizing given sources – nothing like English 102 required. I was conditioned to write in very limited periods of time with barely a second to look back, which was a bold contrast to the reflective manner of college writing. I’ve discovered that taking time to revise (and reflect, and revise some more), in combination with peer reviewing, learning how to better develop my opinions into objective, convincing arguments, and acquiring the skill of researching and implementing sources to support those arguments …show more content…
Overall, this course has exposed me to many new skills that I can implement in later English courses, as well as others like Bioethics, for example, where it’s heavily influenced by having the ability to think beyond one’s own viewpoint. My major, Environmental Public Health, will likely involve situations where I must efficiently convey my ideas and back them up while appealing to important audiences. Public speaking will also likely play a large role in my career, so I feel that English courses condition more concise, developed thinking. Most of all, though, I enjoyed getting to use topics I’m passionate about, and originally found that to be a daunting task since I had previously always been told what to write about. But now, it’s liberating being able to translate a passion into a convincing argument through rhetorical strategies that may later promote change and

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

I’ve always considered myself a writer. It was the one hobby I could point to and say I both loved and was semi-decent at. However, taking an AP English course such as this one changed my idea of just what a “writer” is, all the while transforming how I read, interpret, and understand the written work of others. I never expected that I would one day be unable to read something without “arguing” with it in my head, or that that hot seat would change how I felt about and approached my writing. Then again, I never thought this class would be how I learned how to cook either.…

As I review my work from this semester, it is quite noticeable that my writing has improved a lot since English IV honors. Rhetoric Of all the things I have learned in English 101, rhetoric has continued to be something I use.…

The three sample pieces I chose to include in my portfolio are an argumentative English essay, a book report written for an AP science class, and a lab report. These pieces illustrate my proficiency in multiple subject areas including research and argumentation. The first piece presented in my portfolio is an argumentative essay written for my AP Language and Composition course. The given essay, written by Edward O. Wilson, and AP prompt were taken from the 2009 AP Language exam, found on the College Board website. The prompt instructed students to “write an essay in which you analyze how Wilson’s use of satire illustrates the unproductive nature of such discussions.”…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve.
