Reading books and improving my vocabulary in elementary school has helped me learn to read and write. When I was in the third grade, reading and writing was my favorite thing to do during class. I always liked writing funny stories about people and reading them to the class. Reed was a strict and very stern woman that only allowed things to go her way or nothing at all. By her nice smile and warm welcome on the first day, I was convinced that she was going to be a polite teacher. The next day, I entered her class and sat in my usual cold seat in the back of the room chewing on some Juicy Fruit Gum. She looked at me and simply stated, “Zero.” I was devastated to hear what she said to me as she pulled out a yellow sticky note and wrote down my name. Mrs. Reed assigned us an essay to complete in MLA format that was due the next day; the class looked confused. She explained everything about using MLA format in essays and making research papers. We began to start on our rough drafts as she walked slowly by our desks and examined each one of our papers. I turned in my essay to her at her desk as she quickly proofread my paper. She looked up at me with a grin and said, “You have to start all over or zero.” My heart began to panic as I realized all of my hard work and effort was a waste of time.
