Students who don’t get enough sleep are proven to not learn as well as students who do. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 33% of teenagers have reported falling asleep in school ("Wake …show more content…
Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming reported 70% fewer car crashes when they moved their school start time to 8:55 am. Also, studies show that sleep-deprived teens are more likely to smoke, drink, abuse stimulants, participate in violent activities, and develop immune system disruption. ("Wake Up Calls (Fast Facts)"). Finally, a lack of sleep can heighten the effects of alcohol, and contribute to an increased use of caffeine and nicotine ("Teens and Sleep").
A final reason why schools should start no earlier than 8:30 am is that there is a correlation between the amount of sleep and stress and other emotional problems. Studies show that students who get more sleep have less stress than students who don’t. Also, polls done by the National Sleep Foundation show that sleep-deprived teens often feel sad or depressed, feel nervous, and worry too much. ("Teens and Sleep"). These effects can also be factors of the inability to concentrate in class and getting bad …show more content…
This sounds like such a simple solution, but it’s actually pretty complicated. Everybody has something called biological sleep patterns, and as students become teenagers, their sleep patterns shift so most can’t get to sleep earlier than 11:00 pm. ("Teens and Sleep"). So if teens can’t fall asleep until 11:00 pm, they should be waking up between 7:30 am and 8:15 am to get the desired 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep. But nearly half of high schools start before 8:00 am, so it’s almost impossible for teens to get enough sleep. Finally, teens typically sleep for much longer on the weekends. By changing your sleep patterns like this, the quality of your sleep will decrease. ("Teens and Sleep"). By starting school later, sleep patterns will be less affected which would increase the quality of high school student’s sleep.
Overall, no high schools nationwide should start earlier than 8:30 am. The fact that so many schools start before this time is just stupid. Why make school start so early when so many teens fall asleep in class or can’t concentrate due to sleep deprivation? A poll done by the National Sleep Foundation showed that a majority of the students got seven hours of sleep and 5.9 percent of students got 4 hours of sleep. By making schools start a little later, students will get more sleep, and will therefore receive better grades, better test scores, and won’t struggle
