There was a different atmosphere in high school gymnastics; we were more concerned on how well the team performed and less focused on individual attainments. As team captain, I felt a new kind of pressure, my team depended on me. It was imperative that my teammates and I gave our all in order to obtain our goal of making it to the state competition as a team. For me, this meant I would need to overcome my fear of bars.
At the District Championships, we were all on edge. This was our only chance to make history in our school and qualify for State. Bars was our first event we would compete on. As I stood facing where the judges sat, waiting for my turn to perform, I knew it was crucial I hit this routine. By the time I saluted the judge, I was confident and ready. I had my team supporting me and nothing was going to stand in our

“If I were Shannon Miller this would not happen,” I often thought as I positioned my body onto the bar. I hated heights and even being a few feet in the air on the highest uneven bar unsettled me. It seemed as if I were on the peak of a mountain top and my oxygen supply was thinning out. Each exhale made me dizzier and before you know it, I would be climbing down in a hurry, anxious to see my score even though I knew it would be low. I hated the fear I felt about practicing on the bars and how I believed that I would end up like my older teammate Chanel, who recently had surgery on both of her knees due to an awful fall in the last competition.…

We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

A mental block is where the athlete is afraid of doing a specific skill because of something that happened to them while doing that skill, or something they saw somebody else do on the same skill. Every gymnast goes through these, and they are hard to overcome. Not very many other sports include fear of injury or fall like gymnastics. Just think about how frightening it is to flip two times in a row across a four-inch-wide surface without painfully falling, compared to kicking a ball across a field or swimming across a pool several times.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

My First Broken Bone The time I broke my first bone, I was tumbling and the event affected me greatly. It had a major impact on the way I thought and my mindset when it comes to achieving my goals. Sometimes, things happen in life that bring us down and make us doubt ourselves, but no matter what happens, we should always keep striving to reach our goals. My First Dance Competition The first time I performed at a dance competition was a very exciting and memorable moment for me. I was six years old and insanely nervous. Typically the nerves hit me while I wait in the wing of the stage for my name to be called, but this time it began the moment I woke up in the morning. I remember having to wake up at about six in the morning in order to have time to get ready and be at the convention center in Wichita when the doors opened at 7:30 a.m.…
