Many students and professionals commit a criminal act when writing papers by plagiarizing. Plagiarism comes in various forms, ranging from writing to singing, and people are often aware that they are plagiarizing through these exercises. Merriam-Webster defines plagiarism as “to use the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own words or ideas.” Some instances of plagiarism are unintentional, or accidental; for instance, people plagiarize because they do not know how to properly cite a source or are unaware that they must do so. On the contrary, some plagiarism is intentional, or malicious; malicious plagiarism is often the result of a writer looking for the easiest and quickest way to complete a task or assignment and resorting…

Why are College Students Taking the Easy Way Out? Academic dishonesty is common amongst college students in the 21st century. In fact, “Seventeen percent of undergraduates at Rutgers University admit to cheating on tests, and forty percent admit to cheating on written assignments” (What is Plagiarism, 1). This quote shows that there are many students, especially in college, that are still plagiarizing and cheating. One of the reasons we participate in plagiarizing is because the use of technology has provided us with information that can be accessed quickly and easily.…

We all know someone that cheats or has cheated before. That’s why I think Hotchkiss High School needs an Honor Code. when someone cheats or plagiarizing, they aren’t learning anything. And the people who do the work, are not getting any credit for what is originally their work. They are pretty much getting robbed.…

Plagiarism in college has an extended record, but that does not mean that every student contributes. Some of them still are a 100% original on their work and as a result they stand out, however, those students who enforce plagiarism are not really concern about learning. Therefore, Jeff Gurney’s article is fair enough. As stated in the article teachers must not accept any form of plagiarism; otherwise they are embracing this behavior. And students will use this method not only at college but forward at work.…

Plagiarism was taught to me in every one of my literature classes from ninth grade to twelfth grade, and academic dishonesty was taught to me in every class I have been in since my seventh grade year of middle school. I do know enough about these two topics to avoid any issues in college, because any form of cheating and how to summarizer and give credit to any topic that I have read and used in a paper the correct way had been drilled into me. There wasn’t anything said in class that I didn’t already know about plagiarism, although I didn’t know that using a teaches guide can be grounds of academic dishonesty. Something that’s ground for plagiarism would be paraphrasing an article and not having I cited in the paper. I know enough about what to do and what not to do when writing a paper.…

Using sources without properly citing them is considered thievery. Students find it easier to open up a document and copy and paste the work in their own paper. Which raises the question: what is the point of attending a college or university if you can snag a block of text that does not belong to you and call it your work instead of doing the work yourself? Students have become more creative with their method on stealing work, such as duplicating the source but in their own words, changing some words with synonyms. What this does is show that the student spent most of the effort finding ways to plagiarize without leaving any traces rather than using that time to sit down and work through the processes on his or her…

Plagiarism is not a new problem, which the famous people accused of it including Helen Keller, Martin Luther King Jr., George Harrison, and Joe Biden. There are different types of plagiarism; some are more serious than others. Professor Andrea A. Lunsford of Stanford University notes that one of the most disturbing forms of deliberate plagiarism involves a student’s “handing in an essay written by a friend or purchased (or simply downloaded) from an essay-writing company (246).” The student, who downloads an essay from an online paper mill, is obviously cheating. Students who want to get a degree that they haven’t earned act dishonestly and show no respect for their instructors or for their fellow students who are trying to get an education.…
