High School English Class

Since beginning my grade eleven English course almost two months ago, it has become abundantly clear that I must change my approach to assignments and literature as a whole. As I continue through my years of high school English, I am progressively noticing the connections in the content studied in each of the various courses, through selected literature and topics. Throughout the reminder of this course, and as I advance into grade twelve, I will continue to make my best effort to change and adjust in order to improve myself in a number of different areas. In previous English courses, the volume of work was much smaller, with a much lower degree of difficulty than this year. As a result, I have had to change my approach to assignments significantly. The most obvious difference is in the way I approach written assignments and tasks. In grades nine and ten, I completed written essays and analyse with very little preparation and planning. While I was able to do relatively well, it is obvious that this approach does not work this year with the new work. In the few assignments that I have completed this year, I have made an effort to …show more content…
These specific units have resulted in my newfound appreciation of literature and the connections it can have to the world. For example, earlier in the course, I studied a short story entitled “Flying Machine”. This text contains many themes that connect to the real world, such as trust, fear, and responsibility. The deeper meanings behind texts such as this have changed my approach to literature, by forcing me to be more critical when I’m reading. In previous English courses, I feel when reading, I was only able to scratch the surface of the meaning and significance of the piece. This is further proof that my approach to poetry and short stories has changed since my first experience in a high school English

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

Throughout my English 1102 class I have been assigned to read various works of literature, and create my own works through three essays, several smaller in-class assignments, and discussion. This has included focusing and analyzing different topics and aspects that go into these works. Before this class, much of my literary work would be focused solely on surface material; however, though this class, I have gained the ability to more intently analyze topics and effectively elaborate on them. Before this class, I would read mostly just to know the general idea of what the piece is about; now that I have taken this English class, I have learned to better analyze material. While I already knew about symbolism, and that there can be certain…

I will be writing about what I learned in English II this far this school year. English, in which literature and writing take a prominent stance, is an important subject to comprehend. In English you will learn everything from the techniques to writing the perfect essay to using context clues to find the meaning of the words you don’t understand. I have learned many new things that I have never known before now. I would’ve never suspected that there is many new topics in English that I haven’t covered before, but I was very wrong.…

Tulen Aidar (atulen2), ENGL 160 (38997) With completing the first few weeks in the ENGL 160 class, I was able to benefit from a variety of new things from the class. My expectation about this class was that during the whole semester we will study grammar and structure of academic essays, as well as writing a large number of essays inside the class. However, I was pleasantly surprised, because we began to read interesting article and discuss it and in the end write summary about it. The most challenging for me was the amount of homework.…

My main concern previous to this summer assignment was the level of interest I would have in the novels we read, as well as the difficulty they may contain. However, after reading, I thoroughly enjoyed the short stories and I genuinely believe that the reading level will be sufficiently difficult, yet not impossible. The amount of reading required for the summer assignment felt fairly familiar to the previous year. Nevertheless, I never had to write 5 papers in one summer. This doesn’t raise any concerns for me, however, because I did realize that AP Junior English would require more work, and I prepared myself for it.…

This application has been very beneficial to me and helped me better understand the concepts. I have noticed when viewing articles or websites, I am now more cautious about the background and credibility of the authors. Once the authors seem to check out, I then go on to analyze the writing itself. This semester I became familiar with the different tactics that are used to pull the audience into the writing. These tactics, ethos, pathos, and logos, are used to appeal to the audience in a unique way.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
