Before writing this essay, I read the prompt and decided that I was going to write about my struggles of writing in my high school English classes and the struggles of not understanding how to write well. I wrote notes down on a piece of paper; I wrote about how I struggled during freshman year, being new to the high school environment, and I wrote about my senior year, still struggling with writing but finding strategies that helped better my writing. I wrote a rough draft and had Ruvy and Niara read it, told me their opinions about it, and gave me constructive criticism on how improve it. During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

I appreciate this chance to share with you my academic journey in English 101 and also thank you for taking your time to read my letter. Although I am a freshman who just placed my very first step on college journey and also one of the few ESL students in the class, I did not take this as a discouragement to complete and pass this course with a good grade. Still, I have to admit that English 101 is challenging and difficulty at some level for me but it helps me to develop my skills in writing and critical thinking. During this course, I was having difficulty brainstorming the pieces in my mind into a complete and organized argumentative essay. It took me a lot of time choosing ideas and put everything on my mind constructively onto the paper.…

For non-native English speakers, having to take college-level English may result in a challenge. Especially since doing compositions and writing analytically are not easy tasks.
