Question: How does race affect the rates of high school dropouts in the U.S.?
Every 26 seconds a student in the United States drops out of high school. That is about two dropouts every minute and over 3,300 dropouts every day. Of those 3,300 drop-outs, the majority will be of Hispanic descent, African Americans come in second, and whites are last. There are many individual factors that contribute to each race's dropout statistics. These factors boil down to the cultural differences that influence the students. The backgrounds of the different cultures which are present in the United States affect whether or not the student will drop out; student's drop out rates correlate to the cultures they come from. There are different reasons for each student dropping out but from a broad perspective, Hispanics have problems with the language barrier and cultural differences, Blacks struggle with low funds and illegal behavior, and whites typically have low desire to achieve and/or low funds. …show more content…
There are theories and explanations for each race of student's motive for dropping out. Whites have the lowest drop out rate because they outweigh the other races in population. For example, if 10 people drop out of the Hispanic community, 10 people drop out of the black community, and 10 people drop out of the white community it is the same amount of dropouts per community yet a higher percentage of the total population for the Hispanic and black communities so it looks like whites drop out less. Also, whites make about 12 times more of the student populations than blacks and 10 times more than Hispanics. Because of this, white people typically have a higher position in society. The white drop
