High School Dropout Nation

When a student drops out of high school and doesn’t return, they are considered a “dropout.” A drop-out will have a difficult time after he/she leaves school, as jobs are much harder to obtain without a high school diploma. Unfortunately, dropouts are becoming more common and they are beginning to become a nuisance to society, as they do not make as much money, and are forced to rely on government benefits to stay financially stable. Dropping out forces people to wonder why the student dropped, or for what reason he/she can not continue to stay enrolled in school. The truth lies behind student lives, like the four students featured on Dropout Nation, which show some examples on why school is being neglected, or why it is so difficult to continue going to school.
The first student was a man named Marcus. Marcus was a junior in Sharpstown High school at the time of the video. As he grew up, the neighborhood he was raised was impacting him negatively and over time his father quit his job and began to drink. Marcus’s mother became the only caretaker and struggled to raise Marcus from then on. Marcus really wanted to play football, but because of his poor behavior and bad grades, he was unable to play. Lawrence was a senior at Sharpstown High school at the time of the video. Lawrence’s father was not present during his childhood and his mother was in and out of jail. Lawrence, wanting to graduate so he could set an example for his younger examples, struggled with anger issues. He also disrespected superiors often, which in turn got him into lots of trouble. The teachers often remarked that he was a good student, but with his tardiness and disrespect, he was well on track to dropping out of high school.
