Being a captain of a high school drill team, i’ve been faced with many obstacles and had to deal with a lot of different challenges. As you can imagine, 74 high school girls in one team can be very interesting. Especially when each girl has a unique personality and some sort of an attitude. Learning to deal with them was hard, but it wasn't impossible to manage. But what I can’t seem to get used to is everyones lack of respect and their attitude towards the things they “commit” to, in this case drill team. Throughout the years, generations have gone from saying “yes mam” to “what”. A lot has changed from previous generations that our society shouldn't be proud of. “Trophy Kids” would be the right term to use for these individuals. young people have been rewarded for minimal accomplishments in competitive sports and have unrealistic expectations of working life. My underclassmen are perfect examples of these types of individuals. They don’t understand that yes, it might just be a high school drill team and it probably won’t matter in the future, but we have a set of rules and guidelines that Larriettes have followed for years. Not only is there a set of rules to follow, but it’s going back to basics like respecting your elders and your peers no matter if they are older or younger. For example, if you are given a specific task from our sponsor you, out of respect, should go on and perform the task without question. But in my case, our girls throw fits and show attitudes whenever they are asked to do something by my sponsor and I. When I was a rookie on this team I would do anything and everything they ordered me to do. Not because I was terrified of them but because I respected their authority and knew that I had no right to choose what I wanted to do due to the fact that I’m a rookie on the team and haven’t earned my authority yet.
