In my lifetime I have experienced failure, but out of that failure has come wonderful opportunities and people that have shaped my personality and lifestyle. In elementary school dancing was my passion, it is to this day, but in a different genre. I auditioned for the dance team at my soon to be high school, Presentation. Sadly, to my family’s and my surprise, I did not make it on. I was completely devastated and felt lost; I had no clue what I was going to do in high school. Dance was my life and it was what I wanted to continue through high school. Not one to dwell I picked myself up and focused on my first semester of high school all the while searching for something that reached out to me. I had no clue I could sing, I just knew I could dance so I went for it. I was one of three freshman, out of 60 students, who tried out and made it in. I was both surprised and ecstatic to find something new. It was hard for me to adjust to the singing portion but the dancing felt like home to me. The theater people became an odd little family and I was so grateful and happy to be a part of it. From the failure of not getting on to the dance team came my new love for the theater. That love has grown bigger and deeper in my years in high school. I have been in seven musicals and I am planning on doing two more this year. I was looking for a high school hobby, but I found a family. However, even a family has its ups and downs, and within the theater world I have faced disappointments. When I first began I had to work my way up from the bottom, always getting the ensemble roles and feeling like my true potential was not being acknowledged. However, I was having fun and learning more skills that have helped develop my personality. Through the failure that I have encountered in my time at Presentation high school, I have become a new

Break dancing is a term that derived from mainstream media due to their ignorance and naïveté during the 1900’s and was promoted as a lowly culture. With no accurate knowledge of the hip-hop diaspora but with an indelible need to define it for the nescient masses, hence the term break dancing was created. Nonetheless, once hip hop dancers gained the attention of the media they produced inaccurate terminology in an effort to present the urban dance practice to the masses by creating a Westernized ideal/twist to the originality of the culture. Society constructs an Eurocentric conception forming a gap between anthropologist and scholars that exists due to the incorrect use of terms, the tendency to treat dance left to right, and the limited knowledge of non-western dance forms (joann) This often transpires when the Western domain is introduced to foreign values, society tends to devalue those who do not fit into their Eurocentric realm of the westernized perception of beauty and grace.…

I was unsure if I wanted to even do it, and it would be a couple weeks before I decided. When I knew I wanted to do it, I turned to my family for help. Unfortunately, it was the night before the audition at the time, and I was anxious about acquiring any part. Despite this, my mother helped me practice and to make my audition better so that when the time for the audition came, I managed to get in, while another sixty or so were cut from the cast. I have to give my mom credit for that, and without her to help me, I would have taken a much different direction in extracurricular activities and I would not like performing or even try to audition for another one after having my spirit broken.…

In my world, the sesamoid bone is pushed to unusual extremities, the ankles are turned out to a slightly less than perfect one-hundred and eighty degrees, and the back is always straight as can be. While it can be painful and so far has caused me a stress fracture, hyperextended elbow, and chondromalacia in both knees, it is what I fell in love with, and so have many others. The art of dance has been around since 3300 B.C. in paintings and as a way to pass stories through the generations. It has evolved from its origins, and some dancers have revolutionized the art.
