Darkness consumes the room and spotlights occupy the stage. Huge pitch squeals escape the lips of overly-excited teens and reflect off of the walls of the arena vibrating within the packed crowd. Anticipation and impatience slowly fill the chamber as distant chants grow closer and louder. A silhouette teases the crowd from behind the curtain, and we scream as a familiar song leaks through the speakers. Soon a beautiful, smooth voice breaks through the speakers, overpowering the soft tune behind it. This was it. The staying up all night to buy tickets, the waiting for months, the sitting in the heat, and the running to the stage was all worth it. I was at a Selena Gomez concert, and I was front and center. As I passed through the threshold my feet did not agree with my brain. My binder flew out of my hands as I toppled down. My book bag accompanied me, resulting in a loud thud. The gym rang with laughter. My only desire was to melt into the floor and become oblivious to people, school, everything. I felt heat rising off my skin while I peeled myself off of the gym floor, red-faced. The day seemed to drag on as I strode quickly from classroom to classroom. I avoided eye contact. I clutched my books. I did my work. Finally, after the longest day in history of school days, I went home. Days passed and people began joking about my mishap amongst each other, as well as with me. I would politely dismiss the subject and move along. I did my best to maintain quiet and reserved behind the walls of Ewing Middle School hoping soon the talk would surely pass over. Some weeks later I rode home from school with my head – typically – buried in my small phone. I heard distant, irrelevant voices on the radio buzzing about the latest gossip in the world of celebrities. The voices rang meaningless until I heard one name; Selena Gomez. My phone fell to my lap as I reached for the volume knob anxiously. The voices went on about Selena’s career as a young actress and musician and her history in the art world.
