High School Cliques

Improved Essays
Throughout this film there are many different peer groups present as it takes place in mostly a high school setting where most of the individuals are approximately the same age (p. 152). The movie focuses on one clique, which is the tightly knit small group that Charlie joins at the beginning of the film. The clique consists of six people in total, that do many activities together (p.158). Because the film takes place in a high school there are a lot of crowds that are made visible at parties or large gatherings at someone’s house (p. 159; Lesson 6). Charlie begins to contextualize his crowd as less popular as he is surprised when Brad, who is part of the popular crowd comes to one of his crowd’s parties (Lesson 6). When Charlie sees Brad,

cliques can be associated with where they live. That is Williard 307 and also the Senior apartment. It is very obvious because members will either hang out with residents of Williard 307 or the residents in the senior apartments. When I asked one of the member why did they hang out with the residents in Williard 307 and not with residents in senior apartment, he responded that residents of Williard 307 are less formal and more inclusive. While, residents in the senior apartment are more formal and most of them are also members of delta sigma chi’s corollary (Delt Guy).…

Clique Dynamics According to Bauman and Ennett (2000) studies show that regardless of an adolescent's race, socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, most tend to fall into three categories: A. Clique Member: The majority of clique members' social interactions occur within the same small clique. They comprise less than half of any given school population at a time, with a higher concentration among girls and younger grades. B. Liaisons: Liaisons associate with a few members of multiple cliques and are generally regarded positively by their peers. C. Isolates:…

Mallory Cattle catastrophes After a whole disastrous string of events containing many visits to the emergency room, an unrepaired broken tooth, life changing tragedy, and many legal issues that prevented me from staying at my own school, I journeyed to a new tiny school in the trash can of Los Angeles called Summit View West. Confused, overly optimistic, and determined to start a new, I did my best to start a new reputation; unlike my old one: “That Gay Awkward Weirdo”. Because I had Hung out with Jessica (The Nose Picker), Danni (The Sl**), Sarah (The Autistic Girl), and Bella (The Stalker), it didn’t help my situation.…

“Mean Girls” is the title of one of the most popular movies from 2004 till this day which visually shows how evil most females are towards each other. Yet teenage girls aspire to act like them. Picking on an innocent girl who wears glasses while carrying a handful of books is the main target for these so called ‘mean girls’. Common reasons why girls act a certain way towards others could occur from circumstances such as jealousy, feeling threatened, or their own enjoyment. Yet not all young women turn cruel as a way to be either funny or to embrace their inner Regina George, who is the main antagonist of the famous movie.…

Popularity vs. Outsiders One of the most diversifying things about high school is popularity and being an outsider. Popularity is more of being social, outgoing, and having more friends. An outsider doesn’t have a lot of friends, is shy or timid, and is prone to get bullied more. It’s mostly based on one’s social status. Popularity may be a good thing but it can also be bad.…

During his time in prison, Adolf Hitler wrote that people should, “Be proud of...people when [they] don 't have to be ashamed of [their] social class.” Social class has always been an issue in the world, and one of the largest separating factor between people. As Ellen Brantlinger wrote in her novel, Dividing Classes, “Social class divides how students participate-or do not participate-in activities, and it influences peer acceptance and rejection.” Participation in school activities have a very large effect on a person’s life, and social class can diminish this effect. However, some schools have constantly been underfunded, some schools have been well overfunded, and some schools have been barely holding on to their debts.…

    Jocks And Nerds

Let me start by saying that I find humor in any multimedia or Hollywood portrayal of high school as an amalgamation of divisive and antithetical groups such as the "jocks" and "nerds". Any high school student should agree with me in stating that these depictions greatly elucidate the intricate panoply of student's activities, interests, virtues, appearances, and emotions to an absurd and almost laughable degree. To answer the question bluntly, I do not identify with any of these rudimentary archetypes. I refrain from ever doing so because, as a human, I am much more complex than just a "jock" who plays sports and flunks math, or a "nerd" who enjoys fantasy but is neglected of a social life.…

No matter how much someone hates high school, I think that everybody will miss a piece of it when it's over. High school is filled with drama, love, tears, hatred, and many more emotions. We gain friends, and we lose friends. Some people are involved in so many things, and some people aren't involved in anything. Regardless of all of that, high school is supposed to be the best four years of someone's life, but in a blink of an eye it is over.…

Your entire life you will be surrounded by authority figures, but I think high school is when you start to quickly lose respect for some of those people in your life. For example, there is always that one teacher that no one can stand. Sometimes people are put in positions above you, such as teachers, and yet they have no idea what they are doing. They are both bad at the job and oblivious. This can be extremely frustrating, but you have to try to think about things from their point of view.…

I'm not sure what I'm looking for by posting this here, however, I felt that this subreddit would be the best place to post. I haven't been diagnosed with depression officially, but I have struggled with depressive thoughts/self hatred and everything else that comes in that package for years. In a lot of ways, I've overcome it, but I still carry that burden upon my shoulders. I didn't have friends as a kid. I went to a private school, and my classmates came from broken backgrounds.…

Today, gangs are present in many schools across America, including private schools. Statistics show that forty six percent of students in public schools reported the presence of gangs while two percent of private school students reported gangs (Arciaga, Sakamoto, & Jones, 2010). Furthermore, in 2007, 23 percent of students reported the presence of gangs on their school campus or in the surrounding area, which is an increase from gangs reported in 2003. Although gangs are reported in many schools, the schools in urban areas appear to be the most affected by the presence of gangs (Arciaga, Sakamoto, & Jones, 2010). In 2005, 36 percent of urban students reported gangs compared to suburban students who reported 21 percent and rural students who…

    Social Norms In Schools

Social norms, although directly impacting the school experience of LGBT students, are perpetuated through the influence of three factors. First, social norms are perpetuated through the influence of students who unwillingly conform to expected behavior. Second, social norms predict expected behavior of a given community. Third, the behavior of individuals within a given community is viewed as ‘undesirable’ when it does not match the expected social norm. Each of the factors is no less important than the other; furthermore, the factors sometimes influence social norms in concert with one another.…

Our high school has a reputation of being academic driven, being the top school in our district our students are often under a lot of pressure to do well. They derived a mindset that focused on always receiving a high grade and not enjoying high school for what it is. This toxic mentality can only become detrimental to a student’s psychological health, causing breakdowns and unwanted stress. To alleviate this I joined the Associated Student Body for my high school, I wanted to break school culture and have my peers flourish in a better environment which demonstrates students should be top priority, not just their test scores. While apart of ASB I learned how to work under pressure, meet deadlines and handle criticism.…

How many rules are too many? In today’s society, where fear is rampant, rules have been established to protect us, however these rules also rid us from individual expressions. Schools focus too much in conformity, which prevents us from having our own word in things, because they’re basically controlling what we can and cannot do. Source B shows a high school bell scheduled. It indicates at what exact time they want the students in class.…
