This all relates to the Social Structure of which is upheld within high school. The type of people who you associate yourself with in high school determines yours social ranking throughout high school most of the time. High school is split up into a variety of cliques and/or groups, including the nerds, preps (privileged kids), hippies, emo, stoners and many others.
The nerds were thought to be particularly gifted in terms of their intellectual intelligence in the subjects they are in. They were the kids that had the highest grades throughout high school. People would also sometimes use them to help them pass specific courses they were failing. Kids also attempt to sit beside the supposed “nerd” during test or exam in order to higher their chances of getting a better grade.

Being a part of a group or clique is the first thing, then if there is a fall out with the group, sometimes the people that was once considered to be your friend might now be your enemy. It is not that you might have got in an argument with the whole group, but sometimes a fight with one member of the group might cause a rift with the whole group. Once you are rejected by the group you would be looked on as an outsider or an outcast, putting a huge target on your back. When the target is painted on the back of a boy and a girl, the treatment is on two different aspects of the table. Boys will most likely become the target of physical abuse, while on the other hand girls will most likely be verbally abused, or just be completely

The definition of a clique is “a group of four to six friends with strong affectional bonds and high levels of group solidarity and loyalty: the term is used by researchers to describe a self-chosen group of friends.” (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 283) A crowd is “a larger and looser group of friends than a clique, normally made up of several cliques that have joined together: a reputation-based group, common in adolescent subculture, with widely agreed-upon characteristics.” (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 283)…

    America Needs Its Geeks

The term 'nerd' can, and does, mean different things to different people. When someone is called a nerd by their friends it is not considered a big deal, but when a stranger calls another stranger a 'nerd' or a ‘geek’, it can be seen as aggressive. The sole idea of 'America needs Its nerds' by Leonid Fridman is that America does, if fact, need its individuals that would rather read a book than go out and party, who would rather study than play football, who would rather build upon their academic prowess than their social or physical skills because without kids like these, America; the great, world-class superpower, would be full of sheep who follow the trend of being anti-intellectual and who intentionally dumb themselves down to fit in with people who follow the same stupid trends. One of the points that Fridman makes is that people who are a little less socially amble are often called names like 'geek'. A 'geek', Fridman writes, according to Webster's New World Dictionary, is a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of…

“What’s up, Dracula?”- Sneered a group of bulky football players as they passed Aleister, a Goth, on the hallway of Frederic highschool. The black clad, pale as a moth teenager kept walking by with his head down, unaffected by the sneering from the walking hulks. Lost their interest, the footballers kept going on, not before reminded Aleister how much of a weirdo and loser he is, then quickly went back to their usual topic: sports and girls. In elementary school I did not have a very dramatic social life. Sure, I had a few close friends, as well as a few enemies, but everything was relatively routine. Usually, I would play army tag with my friends, but sometimes I would fight over a class skipping rope with one of my long-time enemies. Eventually, eventually one of us would reluctantly give the skipping rope to the opposing party, but other times I would get irritated and go tell the teacher that the girl was bothering me. Occasionally, the girl would cry in an attempt to not get in trouble, but normally the teacher would tell us to apologize to each other and the matter would be forgotten.…

With its multitude of social groups, school can be likened to a world unto itself; comprising of different sovereign states. From the innocuous witticism of the theatrically inclined to the popular kids of the school’s rugby team, these groups, or cliques as we call them, tend to associate exclusively amongst themselves and can often be defined by a common characteristic. The formation of these social groups is also justified by the need for acceptance and belonging, which are crucial elements in a teenager’s academic journey. However, some feel that this social phenomenon is more bane than boon. Critics feel that these socially exclusively cliques serve as a hotbed for the manifestation of many undesirable behaviors and traits, such as bullying…
