2. Martins feelings of inferiority influence his behavior because Martin is constantly striving to be better at his career. According to Adler “life is not motivated by the need to reduce tension, but instead encourage the desire to move from below to above from inferior to superior.” Martin’s behavior such as refusing to do pro-bono work and deciding not to join a firm where “social games” were going on, displays Martin’s lonely and self- centered behaviors. Martin has low level of self interest because he does not care much about others, as indicated by his unwillingness to volunteer or do pro-bono work. According to Adler, social interest shows itself objectively when others work together toward the betterment of human society, although Martin is a lawyer, he could care less about helping the less fortunate as he once was. It also shows itself subjectively, as people that have things in common with other people want to be part of a group but Martin does not want that, as evidenced by him not wanting to join the law firm. Martin’s personality is very self centered because of these two traits.
