Not only did I teach campers how to make ice cream and friendship bracelets, I made lifelong connections with many of the other counselors. Camp is where I learned what it meant to be part of a supportive community. Although most of us only see each other during summer, it’s an amazing feeling to come back to such a devoted group of people and work together doing what we

Throughout the past four years, I have had many different identities to many different people. I have been a daughter, sister, friend, student, tutor, teammate, team captain, and so much more; my favorite role to play, however, has been that of a camp counselor. Since the summer of my sophomore year, I have volunteered at the Peace and Justice Center’s “Peace Camp for Kids,” a program geared towards helping underprivileged children, accepting them as they are, and convincing them that they are worthy of respect, affection, and dignity. Peace Camp has become an integral part of my identity; my experience there has been, by far, the most rewarding and influential experience that I have ever had.…

I can still remember driving up the camps long driveway road the white gates that surround the perimeter held three different flags; American, Texan, and the Salvation Armys. This is the place I always hoped to return every summer, as the older I grew I was filled with excitement like a child for candy.…
