Imagine if you were a college athlete striving to provide entertainment for your student body and college fans, along with bringing in revenue for your school. Would you want to be paid for all the hard work, time, and dedication you put in, or are scholarships and grants enough to satisfy you? Whether or not college athletes should be paid is a huge controversy in today’s society and includes many pros and cons. One pro being that college athletics provide revenue for companies, but if we were to play devil’s advocate one could say that the student athletes already receive benefits through the school such as scholarship money, grants, and part time jobs. Through research I have discovered that the cons out weigh the pros, therefore, it would…

Most college athletes aren’t good enough to make it to the next level, so why should they be paid to play a sport that they have no future in? Besides, many athletes get scholarships for tuition, room and board, and textbooks. They aren 't actually given money, but getting those things free is a lot like being paid (Cambio 7). Most of their schooling is paid for by scholarships . They do not deserve to be paid to go to school to get an education to go make money at a job.…

Most of these athletes are getting everything paid for including their tuition, meals, and housing. If they were to be paid on top of that, what would be the point of trying to do good in school. The money to these athletes would out weigh getting good grades and would in turn hurt education. The whole point of being good at a sport in a collegiate level is to reward the athlete with an education and a college university. Rewarding them with a salary also would further demonize college sports.…

The NCAA ( National Collegiate Athletic Association ) is a non profit organization that helps establish the athletic programs in colleges. Student athletes, are just that: students, not employees, and they should be treated as such while in college. As said best by Dr. John Acquaviva, a renowned sports journalist, “colleges and universities provide an invaluable and vital service to our communities: education” (3). Student athletes are attending college firstly to receive an education that is essentially priceless. Paying student athletes would only deviate their focus from where it needs to be: getting an education that prepares them with skills necessary for the future. Additionally, “less than 2 percent of college athletes go on to compete at the professional level” (Williams), and for the other 98% of student athletes that do not continue their athletic career past college, the degree they earn in college is vitally important; therefore, keeping the athletes focus on academics…

Also I believe colleges and universities should not have to pay athletes because they are already providing them athletic scholarships and other benefits. An athlete’s scholarship is a form of salary. According to the NCAA, the average value of a full scholarship at an in-state, public school, is $18,000 a year. For an out-of-state public school the value is $25,000. This money goes towards tuition fees, room and board, required textbooks and much more.…

Plenty of people argue that it is unfair student athletes do not receive a salary with all of the hard work and dedication they put into the sports that they play for universities. However, these same people do not understand the reason these student athletes do not get paid to begin with. Allen Sanderson and John Siegfried explain that if college athletes received pay, there would be “general labor laws” that would not allow these athletes to practice and work as hard as they do today. These labor laws would also restrict them from receiving “workers’ compensation” if injured since they would still be “considered students rather than employees” (Sanderson and Siegfried). Therefore, college athletes would have to follow certain labor laws that…

Whether it be football, basketball, or hockey; sports bring large amounts of revenue to their respective Universities year round(Wilson). The NCAA Regulations states, “You are not eligible for participation in a sport if after full-time collegiate enrollment you have ever taken pay, or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport” (Beaupre). This law has prevented college athletes from getting paid since the start of college athletics.…
