Upping the Ante: Teens Should Participate in Athletics

Self-centered, arrogant jocks and superficial, ditzy cheerleaders or driven, motivated athletes who avoid typical high school pitfalls: you be the judge. Sometimes participating in high school athletics is not given the wide-ranging acclaim that it deserves. Not only should athletes be recognized for their performance on the field, but also off the field; this includes their ability to balance athletics and academics. Students in sports will be devoting much of their free time to sports. Doing athletics as a teen is very important. If you are a student, get involved now; if you are a parent, sign your teen up. Whether you are a teacher, doctor, or even a construction worker, encourage teens to participate in athletics! Experiences and lessons that derive from sports will better prepare and enhance the lives of adolescents: physically, mentally, academically, and in many more ways.

Sports help teens have healthy bodies by encouraging high amounts of physical activity, including aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Being in good physical shape can help adolescent bodies in many ways. “The positive physical effects include: stronger bones and muscles, weight loss, endurance, and increase cardiovascular capacity” (Physical Activity Facts). These effects tremendously help adolescents as their bodies develop and mature; having a physically healthy body can affect students positively in almost every aspect of their life. Being fit in general gets the body working in a higher functioning manner. High amounts of physical activity and having a fit body shapes the lives of teens. These healthy habits can also have positive benefits which last their entire lifetime such as: lowering risks of diseases in the future, developing confidence, and helping students with their abilities to think and
