Almost every evening during the fall and winter, there is basketball being practiced or played in the Cherokee County High School gymnasium. I see the sweaty players running up and down the court and hear the squeaking of shoes on the wood floor. When basketball is going on, the gym changes. Next, after I sit down in the student section, I can see the game better. I can see the …show more content…

The players are often more calm, but more frustrated with themselves because they cannot perfect any certain skill. I can hear the players communicating with each other, and encouraging each other when they mess up. If the players are running during practice, I can hear their heavy breathing as if they had just run a 5K. But, a 5K may be the same amount of running they do during practice. Many athletes, especially those in high school, play contact sports like football or wrestling that require athletes to be in heavy contact with each other, increasing the chance of injury. Perhaps the most serious injury that many coaches, parents, and even athletes shrug off is the concussion. A concussion occurs when the athlete experiences trauma to the brain that alters their cognitive ability, memory, or judgement. Concussions are extremely serious injuries that must be handled with care and medical professionalism. Athletes should be required to sit out and rest to allow their brains to fully heal before returning to play because they have an increased chance of being injured further, because further concussive injuries increases the chance of permanent damage, and because athletes must recognize the severity of having received a concussion.…

Basketball is deeply rooted in Japanese American history with leagues starting up as early as the 1930s. Basketball is more than a sport in the Japanese American community; it’s a way of life. After fourteen year of struggling for the rights to build the 35,000 square foot fifteen million dollar center, the Little Tokyo Service Center was approved to start developing the old parking structure. For the Japanese American community members, this development was as much of a push for recreational space as it was to protect Little Tokyo's cultural identity and economic stability because it was seen as the best way to invite the Japanese American youth community back into Little Tokyo. This new development builds community by organizing over 10,000 residents in leagues and tournaments.…
