Thank you for your consideration in reference to the above opportunity. I am an educator, recording artist, songwriter, composer and singer with an extensive history in the music business. With ten years’ experience teaching on the college level, I am also a proficient voice teacher and musical director. At La Guardia Community College/CUNY I taught voice and chorus in multiple musical styles; musical theatre, pop, jazz, and original material. My students came from some of the worst schools in the NYC school district. Voice lessons, learning rhythm, notation and harmony, and the discipline required in music was opposite to their way of understanding. However, by the time we were finished with the semester, all of my students were practicing and …show more content…
I took my students all over the school with a rolling PA system to present pop up concerts. These were wildly successful outings and filled my students with tremendous confidence and motivation. As preparation, I conducted acting exercises and lyric analysis based on my own training, which helped the students understand the subtext in each lyric.

For the music history classes, I took my LaGuardia students to the opera and the symphony in NYC. These were truly amazing outings and the students were grateful. Each student was required to write a paper on a musical concert and my undergraduate training assisted me. Each student was given the opportunity to present two drafts before the final submission. Each student would sit with me while I discussed their papers and leave with a much greater understanding of how to create better work.

I believe I would contribute so much to Uncommon Schools, and I certainly would love the opportunity to chat with you about my ideas. Below are links from Soundcloud, which illustrate various aspects of my writing and

When I was in Haiti, I remember sitting in class thinking about how much I love biology and chemistry. Coming back from school, I always told my parents and my little brothers what I learned in those classes. When I came to this country three years ago, my interest in the scientific field grew more. I finally thought deeply about what I wanted to do with my life and decided to major in chemistry. I became so interested that even when I was bored, I went through my chemistry book just to read and learn.…

During my employment at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston I was able to work with a graduate of MCPHS, Kaiming (Kyle) Chiang, MPAS, PA-C. His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…

Diversity, life, and the ability to do a cartwheel are some of the aspects of myself that I will contribute to FASP as a future scholar. Let's go in order. Diversity has become widespread where almost no one is a purebred - except me. Both my parents were born in Lebanon and are both full, pure Lebanese which (if we do the math) means I am also. In having parents that are the prideful Lebo's they are each child knows the traditional step line dance – dabke - and speak fluent Arabic.…

At the beginning of the school year, my senior English students read arguably one of the most challenging texts, language-wise, they will encounter all year: Beowulf. The students complete this reading primarily as homework while they simultaneously read The Canterbury Tales during class. As students are reading two texts, as they do for much of the school year, it is difficult to devote equal time to both works and to assess both works with enough variety that class does not become boring or predictable. While the students do have traditional short answers quizzes, class discussion, and an in-class group project in which they define vocabulary from the text, compose summaries, and create questions to quiz their classmates on Beowulf, the students also have the opportunity to create and share an individual project related to Beowulf.…

Listening to both of my grandparents' accounts of German U-Boats off the coast of Virginia Beach, blackouts in Norfolk, Virginia during World War II, and my grandfather's first-hand accounts of serving in the Navy triggered my interest in history. My curiosity about the past inspired me further by looking at family photographs, heirlooms, and letters that explored their backgrounds. When I attempt to explain to people what I am studying in graduate school, family and friends often look confused. When I clarify that I would eventually like to work for a museum, the National Park Service, a library, or public and private archives, the light bulb turns on and they understand. The best way to describe the field of public history is in a concise manner that it is history beyond the traditional classroom setting and is relevant to real world situations.…

My school offered only one music class for all students, grades third through fifth. My standards were high, and I hoped that I would be pushed by my teacher. The mediocre voices and musical knowledge of my fellow classmates made me regret this class. A few could carry a simple tune, while others were perplexed by the designs on the page. The worst part was that my teacher continuously said, “Great job everyone!…

I feel that continuing professional development is a very important aspect when working in any helping field. Personal and professional growth not only aids individuals in understanding more of who they are, but also aids in understanding client differences and client needs. Previously, I worked as a Sexual Assault Coordinator at a nonprofit agency and my job required me to work with clients of all ages and diverse demographic backgrounds. To better understand my clients I went to many trainings covering topics regarding specific issues I may have to deal with when working with abuse victims. If I did not take the initiative to learn more about those I provide service to, I feel I would be doing them a disservice as a counselor.…
