My high school experience has been strikingly different than what I see on TV, in movies, or read in books. While I know some people at my school clearly identify with a single archetype, I feel that I cannot be characterized by any one of these labels: jock, nerd, or rebel. Rather, I am a unique mix of the qualities of all three.

I am like a jock because I am serious about the sports in which I participate. I run cross country, winter track, and spring track. I’ve always worked very hard to improve my times and challenge myself; running is a lifelong sport and I will continue it as long as possible. There is a unique camaraderie on a cross-country team. We are a tight-knit, collaborative group who cheer for each other during meets and practices. We all run together in races whether ranked as JV or varsity, and no one is excluded. I read all kinds of books for pleasure, from biographies such as Unbroken to fiction like The Hunger Games to nonfiction such as Freakonomics. I am also genuinely curious about the natural world. When I participated in a National Geographic Student Expedition to Iceland, I became intrigued with endangered aquatic algae formations called “lake balls,” and researched them intensively. I prioritize my schoolwork ahead of my social life. I complete my homework first thing after school. I love the satisfaction of getting A’s on assignments I give my all. While I might not be a stereotypical nerd, I know that working hard will help me achieve my future

As I entered into my sophomore year of high school, my future aspirations all began with one simple choice that unexpectedly turned into one of the most drastic decisions I had made yet. After my freshman year, I started attending a career academy, Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, where I chose Dental Hygiene as my career pathway. After making this choice, I had no idea how much of the spectrum of dental hygiene I would be experiencing for the next couple years of my life. I performed hands-on practicals, as well as volunteering at a continuing education course for Dental Hygienists. Progressively, I took part as a participant of a regional and state Dental spelling bee.…

In many academic institutions a hierarchy is created based on unspoken rules. Students may gain access to the top of the food chain in school by having expensive clothes, cars, or by being apart of the “right” sports teams or clique. This social construct, which I have experienced first hand at numerous schools, limits the influence students have over their own self image. Through rivalry and exclusion, students must choose a parochial identity rather than developing their personality from cumulative experience. Too easily can one student be considered a jock or a nerd, and rarely do these two groups find mutual ground through academics.…
