One of the major differences between high school and college is my experience with writing papers. Throughout my high school career I rarely had to write papers, and when I did the teachers helped me along every step of the way - practically writing the paper for me. I was also given long periods of time to write a single paper. However, in college things are very different. Almost every week in college I am required to write papers in several classes and finish the assignments in a short period of time. So learning about my writing process and how it works is very important to me. The first thing I do when I receive an assignment to write a paper is panic. In my stressed out state of mind, I attempt to write down everything the

For this step, I use my computer and spread out all my notes and books for easy access. My outline is placed right next to me so I can stay on track. I usually write for several hours before taking a short break to refresh my mind. After taking a short break I get right back to work and complete the rough draft.
Once the rough draft is complete, I usually take a long break and go do something fun. Typically, I won’t even look at it until the next day. The next day I look over everything to see if it sounds good. Then, I seek out a second opinion and have someone proofread my paper. They usually make a few suggestions and I change a few things to improve my paper.
Finally, I am finished and ready to turn in my paper. This is definitely one of the scariest parts about writing a paper. I usually receive good grades for all my papers, but I still worry about what the teacher will think and how the paper will impact my grade. This is probably my biggest problem with writing papers. All the worrying adds a lot of stress to my writing and may keep me from being more creative in my writing process.
Ultimately, learning about my writing process and the different techniques that work for me have helped me to become a better writer – and more successful in work and

Back in April, Max Barry wrote an excellent article for LitReactor on some of the common frustrations surrounding the first draft. I want to add my two cents to this topic because the first draft is something I’m routinely asked about — and I think this process gets a lot of attention for a lot of wrong reasons. To be specific: it’s my opinion that writers' anxiety surrounding the first draft is wholly axiomatic as to why it’s often so frustrating to begin with. Look, the first draft isn’t exactly the most important step in the writing process (more on that later), but it is, of course, thefirst step; it’s where a story leaves your head and takes residence in the world. So, it’s natural for this to be a process wrought with indecision, second-guessing…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Unless I have a very strict and short deadline, my writing process begins with thinking and reading about the topic or subject matter of my paper.
