When a star is born it can take one of two paths. It can either take the path of a high mass star or the path of a low mass star. A high mass star will be between 10-50 solar mass and a low mass star will be between .8-10 solar masses. One solar mass is equal to M⊙ = (1.989±0.004) x 1030 kg, which is A LOT. Either path it takes, the one of a high mass or low mass star it will live about 90% of it’s lifetime in its main sequence. Once achieving nuclear fusion the star slowly contracts over billions of years to make up for the loss of heat and energy.
