High Intensity Interval Training

Improved Essays
High intensity interval training (HIIT) has become incredibly prevalent in the fitness industry over the past few years. There are many gyms around the country that only focus on high intensity interval training work outs, and many of the ones who don’t focus solely on high intensity interval training, offer classes. One of the major draws to high intensity interval training is that, it is said, there is fat burn from twenty-four to seventy-two hours after the shorter workout is completed. Which is appealing to anyone who has a busy life with work, children and social lives. Time is the number one reason that people do not work out, “I am too busy” or “I don’t have enough time”. So, getting a greater physical and physiological benefit from a shorter more intense workout is appealing to many people. There have been numerous studies and research done to investigate these claims. …show more content…
The biggest draw to high intensity interval training is the molecular changes in the muscle which increased the body’s ability to burn fat up to seventy-two hours after the work out is completed while the body returns to its normal resting metabolic rate(Hoeger & Hoeger, 2015). Whereas, a steady state workout only takes up to ninety minutes for the body to return back to a normal metabolic rate; thus, making these types of workouts better for burning fat. High intensity interval training also has been shown to have many other health

I’m aware that all exercise is not created equal and this is where aerobic and anaerobic exercise come in. Although the two may differentiate, both burn fat as well as boost metabolism. During aerobic exercise, oxygen is carried through our breath to the muscles giving them sufficient intake of energy needed to sustain long periods of light activity without needing to take energy from another source. During anaerobic exercise, there is no oxygen being carried to the muscles, therefore these activities occur over shorter periods of time. The demand on the muscles causes the muscles to break down sugars, resulting in higher lactic acid production.…

Since intermittent exercise allows for recovery the participants should not fatigue as fast, as when they are doing continuous exercise. We hypothesized that intermittent exercise bouts are more effective than moderate continuous training, during intermittent exercise participants will exercise longer and have a greater work output. High-Intensity Interval Training High-Intensity Interval Training (also known as HIIT) is a specialized form of interval training that involves short intervals of maximum intensity exercise separated by longer intervals of low to moderate intensity exercise (High Intensity Interval Training). A recent study compared participants who did steady-state cardio for 30 minutes three times a week to those who did 20 minutes HIIT three times per week. The result is astonishing. The HIIT group showed a 2 percent loss in body fat while the steady-state group lost only 0.3 percent (High-Intensity Interval Training: The Ultimate Guide). Due to such outstanding fitness results, now more clubs have utilized HIIT as a selling point.…

Sprint interval training (SIT) is a subclass of high intensity interval training (HIIT), defined as “4 to 6 repeated bouts of high intensity, short duration (<30 s) sprints followed by a relatively long recovery time (~4min).”1,2 In contrast to SIT, traditional endurance (TE) requires more time and is typically performed at submaximal levels. Past research has shown that SIT typically improves anaerobic performance while TE typically improves aerobic performance.3,4 However, more recently studies have been comparing the two in regards to aerobic capacity and there is potentially more overlap that what was previously believed. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is a primary measurement of aerobic fitness which typically improves with TE.…

Abstract Whens humans exercise, their oxygen supply needs to be increased in order to produce the energy needed to sustain this workload. Humans will use a variety of cardio-respiratory mechanisms in order to supply and meet the oxygen levels the body needs during exercise. In this study we wanted to see how different individuals respond to exercise, specifically how long they can work and how efficiently they work. We predicted that females who exercise will have a higher relative-VO2, higher a-vO2-difference, higher stroke volume(SV) and higher cardiac output(CO) at their peak work rate; than individuals who do not exercise.…

Cardio intervals do not require much muscle involvement, which in return can cause smaller or weaker muscles. Furthermore, by not losing muscle mass your body focuses on burning fat in a short amount of time. An article published in dailyburrns.com, Eric Salvador, the head instructor at the Fitness Center in New York City, provides insight to how interval training burns more body fat in a short amount of time. “A high-intensity workout increases the body’s need for more oxygen during the effort and creates an oxygen shortage, causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery. “ The afterburner effect is referred to as “Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption and is the reason why intense exercise will help burn more fat calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts (Schlinger).”…
