Honor codes need to have purpose and appropriateness; their placement are not for the intent of being strict. Negative feedback from honor codes is usually the result of the students feeling unheard, misunderstand and over-punished. The Revere High honor code offers a 2 step system where when caught doing specified misdeed: when caught the situation is first evaluated by the teacher. This holds a strong importance because the teachers have a more direct understanding of the situation. Their connection to the students and the task given can aid them in doling out a proper sentence. The teacher and the student have a private conference where specific correction plans and permanent records are made to resolve incident (Revere High School Handbook, 2013). This allows the student to take something away from the experience and leaves a second thought when coming to the decision to cheat, lie or plagiarise again. Confidentiality is maintained so it reduces the widespread talk of the incident being passed around (Source B: Vangelli,1999) or embarrassment the student may feel to be in such position (Source F: McCabe and Pavela, 2005). The objective of the honor code is to hold students accountable for themselves and prompt them to make honest choices. It defends its right to be maintained because it show deep thought and planning in defining offense and a method for penalties. The clarity and thorough informing of students of the standards and regulation the school holds for cheating, lying or plagiarism ensure that students are dependent on themselves and their choices do not come from any faulty information. The protocol has a 2 level system that offers the case up to the teacher then higher administration. This balance it gives allows situation to be dealt with the proper amount of seriousness and discipline. Honor codes are often driven by the wrong motives therefore they result in failures.
