Through the history and evolution of education, mentors have struggled over the best way to challenge their students to reach their peak. Although there are countless methods that have been debated and finessed, the use of the traditional grading scale seems to be a large source of current disputes. Some teachers argue that such a fixed system of testing and ordering pits students against each other, creating an air of competition that should not exist in the classroom. It gives a child a number and tells them how “good” they are. Other educators say that this is not necessarily detrimental.…

The Indiana Academy Application: Short Answer & Essay Questions 1. If I were to go to the Academy for the next two years, I feel like I would handle stressful classroom and academic situations very similarly to the way I do now. Currently, if I encounter a stressful academic situation, I tend to not procrastinate on it and try to get it done as fast as possible (while still doing my personal best of course!). However, at the Academy, the atmosphere in which I would handle stressful situations would be quite different.…

In the essay “Tougher Grading Better For Students” the author goes on for several paragraphs about research and studies that show that students learn more when they are challenged. Throughout this article I found myself disagreeing with the author multiple times, this study took so long to conduct and happened long enough ago that it can’t possibly take into account the technology of today and the effect it has had on today’s students. The worst assumption of the whole essay is that standardized testing is actually a good standard of measurement for students, as we as a society have grown and diversified, one would think that our schools would have as well and developed new ways of determining knowledge and learning. Instead schools continue to use standardized testing to determine whether students that have completely different strengths and weaknesses are good at a subject.…

My GPA is not a valid indicator of the amount of work that I have put in through each semester. In my first year of taking business classes, I had been pledging for a business fraternity for 10 weeks and the workload was equivalent to an internship which hindered my time in focusing directly on school. My second year of college, I had taken up the responsibility of paying for my own living expenses, including rent and meals. To pay for that, I began working as an intern at an accounting firm. As rewarding as it is to be able to learn skills ahead of time, I wanted to further my experience by taking accounting practicum.…

My curiosity was kindled when I saw how cotton seeds which were fed into machines at one end of the industry were miraculously turned into edible oil at the other. The size and sound of huge machinery left me wondering what exactly was happening inside those pieces of equipment which converted raw materials into finished goods.…
