. Leadership is regularly written about in the hopes that people will read and be able to apply those things written to become minimally effective at leading. Leading, directing coaching teaching, influencing, ordering, forcing, negotiating as well as at least a half a dozen more adjectives are all parts of leadership. Timing, assuming a person has a working knowledge of all the aforementioned helps to create a progression towards an effective leadership environment. To create and sustain an effective environment to accomplish things not normally pursued by individuals takes more than working knowledge. Skilled craftsman didn’t become skilled by reading about how to be a craftsman, nor did he/she become skilled by walking into a shop and turning …show more content…
I’ve been fortunate and sometime unfortunate to have been in the Leadership shadow of many types of Leaders almost all who have been paid to be in those positions. Having served in as many as 3 branches of the service and spanning some 30 years reserve and active duty you could say I’ve seen it all. Additionally, I spent a good portion of my life in the civilian sector 20 years in the airfreight business 8 of which I was an operations manager. I can honestly and completely say without any remorse I do not have one person who remotely solely influenced my leadership skill set. Rather a combination of many individuals combined leadership skills worth emulating as well as those to be rejected. Even the leaders who I often rejected as a whole had some characteristics worth holding onto or shaping into my own leadership skill set. I can recall at least several entrepreneurs who were very difficult to work for, yet had successful businesses Tony DeMarco ruled his trucking company with an iron fist, what he said is what you got paid to do. If he didn’t say it didn’t get done. Of course, this is difficult because unless Tony was everywhere all day his workers could either stand idle, or do the wrong thing. Tony was fortunate to have kept his business small enough to be able to lead his work force more or less by making them do what he knew was successful and not branching out or growing larger enough to depend on anything but his own knowledge and experience. I hold myself in a simple way of looking at things and maybe this phrase sums it up best. I shall not cease from mental fight nor shall my sword sleep in my hand. I’m willing to work hard past any obstacles that I’m confronted with; all efforts to understand and negotiate will be exhausted. When required to execute my plan I will do so with conviction and determination. What is really behind this thought, an ability to evaluate myself and look at my course of action from as many directions before execution? Engaging brain before mouth is simpler to remember, don’t demand or ask of or speak out without thinking. leading other personal to the point arrogant or ignorant things come out of my mouth. Be prepared to back up all requests, directions with actions demonstrating 100% success, and ready to accept recalculating plan to achieve
