A student might plan their high school career and university applications around the idea of a career in law, then go to postsecondary, start taking courses, and realize they do not actually enjoy it, or are not very good at it. In fact, many students find themselves in programs they do not enjoy or do not have the skills required to succeed. The structure of postsecondary programs allows students to change their major and their courses to find what they enjoy doing, so they do not end up stuck on a path to a career they will hate. This gives students the opportunity to find the programs they do enjoy and work towards a career that will be successful as well as fulfilling. Postsecondary education is developed to help students prepare for a specific work environment. Classes provide necessary information as well as mirroring workplace situations that are expected in the workplace. Medical students are given a chance to work with real tissue and do co-op placements in hospitals, graphic design students work in an environment similar to the expected workplace and take projects in the form of working with clients. Postsecondary education also provides students with a chance to create connections that will be useful after graduation, with teachers who also work outside of the school, co-op placements, and various events held by the faculty.
