The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term “college” as a noun that state is an independent institution of higher learning offering a course of general studies leading to a bachelor's degree. In today’s society, individuals attend college to expand their career opportunities and to also increase their learning experience. History states that the first university was established in medieval Europe, but Harvard University was the the first university in the United States that dates back to 1636. As of today, college tuition is a hot topic and people have realized how high it has gotten over the years. According to US News, the total consumer price index inflation increased by 52.7 percent from August 1997 to August 2017 (Boyington, 2017). According to Business Insider, it states that “the average annual increase in college tuition from 1980-2014 grew by nearly 260% compared to the nearly 120% increase in all consumer items” and that “in 1980, the average cost of tuition, room and board, and fees at a four-year post-secondary institution was $9,438 and the number has since climbed to $23,872” (Jackson, 2015). The United States is said to be the only country to have such high tuition for college students. On the other hand, there are countries that provide either little cost or no cost at all for college fees. For instance, Norway has free tuition for public universities. This gives students the opportunity to earn degrees at their top-ranked institutions and still be able to afford the cost of living. Because of the need of receiving college degrees and the want of higher learning, colleges will continue to increase their tuition knowing that student will still attend their schools. As student wish that the cost of tuition stops increasing, there are actual people that are trying to keep college tuition
