High Cost Of A College Education Essay

Everyone here wants a college education. Everyone at South Houston High School has aspirations and they all want to be successful. Most students here are of hispanic descent, with immigrant parents. These parents came here to give their children a better life. The students, like their parents, want to have a better life than they would have in their mother country. Unfortunately, families often have insufficient funds for college education of their wards. Most of these parents come to America illegally, so they can not always find the best jobs. Even those who do come legally, do not have the college education as regular Americans do. These parents take up jobs that do not bring a high enough salary. For example, my father is the main source of income in my family and has a good job. He is a truck driver and earns around 50 to 60 thousand dollars a year. That is about the average middle class income. However, a fluctuating income and supporting six other people is rough. More so, the average cost of a four year university is about 30,000 dollars a year. That itself is half of my father’s income. Thirty thousand is the average income of a middle class individual. However, the average american believes a family of four needs at least an income of 58,000. The problem there is that my family of seven lives on an income of 60,000. That is 2,000 more than what a family of four is believed to need. Meaning, a family of seven cannot live on half an income. Due to this, my father used to tell me this story …show more content…
Stop making college seem like it’s only allowed for the higher ranking students. Half of the people who were accepted into San Jacinto College, or any community college, believe college is competitive. It isn’t. Everyone is accepted into a community college. Every single one of these students have a chance. Not to mention, they’ll receive the same tuition for less than half the price INCLUDING scholarships that they now will know
