Since the beginning of her career, The First Lady Michelle Obama has show impeccable respect to herself as a woman, wife, mother and leader, but also has demonstrate respect to others, despite their political differences (Forbes, 2012). At times, work can be very stressful and sometimes can be short staff on certain shifts. This has led to numerous amounts of falls and important tubes being pulled at the hospital. Everyone is so busy that at times it hard to keep an eye on the patients that are at risk for falls. Being a neuro floor means patients come in with head injuries and can be very combative at times. Being short staff has led to a lot of nurses leaving to go to other places of work.…
Potter, Deshields, & Kuhrik (2010) investigated delegation practices between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nursing Assistive Personnel (NAPs) in the oncology setting to understand how both groups viewed practices of delegation and their possible impact on outcomes. Delegation was defined as “the transfer of responsibility for the performance of a task from one individual to another while retaining accountability for the outcome” (Potter et al., 2010, p. 157). Registered nurses often delegate low-risk, repetitive, and necessary tasks Nursing Assistive Personnel (NAPs), who may be nurse aides, orderlies, nursing assistants or others (Potter et al., 2010). I am interested in the University of Michigan’s School of Nursing. The process of selecting a college led me to look for a school that would give me the strongest education and best preparation for my career. I also wanted a nursing school that had access to a world class medical center. I am attracted to the University of Michigan’s academic reputation and the fact that the University of Michigan is affiliated with one of the top hospitals in the world. I have enjoyed the STEM subjects and consider science and math strengths.…
For many nurses it may take years to find the specialty in which they fall in love with and want to spend their career in. However, for me it just rather found me. After nursing school, I had my first child and decided to stay at home with him for about a year. Since, I waited and it was during a time in which anyone was lucky to find a job, I ended up in what I thought was just going to be a start to something “better”.…

Many high school seniors have a hard time selecting a major. Most people probably thought I would do something with mathematics. Mathematics seemed to run in my family but simply doesn’t hold the interest for me as it does for my father or siblings. While I have been fortunate to realize what I would like to study in college and spend my life doing, nursing was not a lifelong calling nor did I have an epiphany.…
Ever since I was a child, I have been interested in nursing. While other kindergarteners were picking out cute outfits for their dolls or working on their hair, I was taking my dolls temperature and her blood pressure. I turned my room into a hospital, where I had enough space to treat five dolls at a time. For birthdays and Christmas, my wish list began with new “doctor tools” and more patients. From this point on, I knew that I had a career in nursing ahead of me.…
A similar cultural experience that I have experienced in my nursing practice is provided to augment the importance of cultural awareness. A Spanish speaking woman was admitted to my unit to rule out a stroke. By the time I had the privilege of caring for her she had been in the hospital for two days. I got bedside report, from the previous registered nurse, and was told that she did not speak any English and comprehended only simple English. During report, I couldn’t help but keep looking at this woman’s face, she was scared, confused, and frustrated.…
The Importance of Attention to Detail in Nursing and the Potential for Errors When Not Implemented Noticing the details that a patient may present with can save their life or at least prevent further complications. The ability to prioritize your time to best care for all your patients is imperative when giving care. Obtaining vitals yourself, at the beginning of the shift or before giving a medication can prevent a combination of errors. When going through a head to toe assessment, noticing the color of the skin, lips, and eyes.…
The Role of Nursing It is said that the nursing profession is one of the most respected and trusted careers there are. From the beginning, a nurse’s role was to nurture and mend those that are sick, frail and even through the process of end of life, but it doesn’t just stop there. Nursing has come a long way and entails many more aspects than they are even given credit for. A nurse wears many hats and is required to perform duties outside of healing obvious wounds.…
