High blood pressure, scientifically known as hypertension is a very common disease in adults. This happens when blood flows through blood vessels at higher than normal pressures. There are different causes to this disease. Some include smoking, diet with a lot of sodium, and poor physical activity. Although it is hereditary, there are ways to prevent complications from hypertension like a heart attack, dementia, and kidney disease. Tobacco is a leading cause for hypertension. The chemicals that are put in tobacco do harm to your blood cells. By narrowing your arteries and hardening their walls it causes your blood pressure to rise. Sodium works its way through to your kidneys to help your body retain and store more water. The extra storage of water raises your blood pressure putting strain on the kidneys, arteries, heart, and brain. The excess blood pressure that is being forced from the high sodium intake strains the interior of the arteries. The smaller muscles in the walls of the arteries become strengthened and tend to thicken. This makes the space inside of the arteries smaller and raises the blood pressure even higher. Slowly over the years the cycle of the increased blood pressure lead to the arteries bursting or becoming narrow enough that they end up completely clogged. This causes the organs that were receiving blood from those arteries to lack the oxygen and nutrients it needs. This results in organ damage and can be deadly. Doctors recommend that people with hypertension maintain a diet with reduced salt. The best way is by eating foods with less sodium. It might taste less flavorful at first but your taste buds will get accustomed in a couple of weeks and the food will be more
