Little is known about the life of this Early Netherlandish Renaissance artist, but we do know that both his father and grandfather were also painters. Bosch's father Antonius van Aken was also an adviser to the Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady, a group of Christians dedicated to glorifying the Virgin Mary. Not long before he began work on The Garden of Earthly Delights, Bosch followed his father's lead and joined the Brotherhood as well.

Bosch lived in an historical period full of paradoxes, contrasts, and contradictions (much like our own!). It was the world of the Golden Renaissance. His life was almost exactly contemporaneous with that of the greatest genius of the 15th-Century Golden Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). understood that the Renaissance would be crushed, unless man were uplifted from his bestial condition, to become man in the image of God.
