Hieratic scale in artwork is a way for artists to convey the importance of a person by showing them larger. Not only do artist use hieratic scale, but they also show importance by the way they make the people look and how they are placed in the works. Also some artist choose to show importance by using the meaning behind the artwork without actually showing the important figure. Many artists use this method in religious art and political art. Justinian was an Emperor and thought very highly of himself. He often portrayed himself as a God and wanted his people to look at him as the same. In the mosaic, Justinian is in a purple robe that is the same as Christ’s and carrying the offering bowl so that he is not only looked at as a political leader but also a religious leader. Not only is Justinian in the middle looking in charge and important, but also Maximianus is portrayed as important. Maximianus name is the only name that is written on this piece while he holds a cross in his hands. Maximianus is thought to be leading Justinian towards salvation. This piece is made to make him look important and better than the others. In “Victory Stele of Naram-Sin” there is also hieratic scale politically. The art piece shows King Naram-Sin over a mountain of people. It is very clear to be able to pick out the King because he is towering over everyone. He also wears a crown symbolizing his role. There are people bowing down to him as he holds a stick like object. Also by having him at the very top, it shows that he is more important because he is closer to the gods and on top of the mountain while everyone else is lower. “Ambrogio Lorenzetti, The Well-Governed City”, at the Palazzo Pubblico is another example of political importance. In the piece the Lorenzetti doesn’t make someone larger than the other people to show importance like a lot of other artists. Lorenzetti shows the wealthier outside of the city halls on horses riding around in nice and bright clothes while the poor are walking, plowing the field, and working hard. Inside the city halls, there are wealthier people walking but also riding horses while there is a beggar begging for something from a man or woman riding a horse. Often the dead were looked at as important in many art pieces. In the two details from the “Hagia Triada Sarcophagus” it shows men bringing

St Agnes was tortured for being a Christian in her time, it was against the law to follow Christianity. Although in Australia I can not go through what St Agnes did for being a Christian, many people around the world are still tortured, placed in jail and even murdered for simply being a Christian. A way that I can help is by writing a letter to the united nations raising awareness of the lack of freedom of religion around the world. I would ask them to work hard in the 6 countries that the American government marked as “countries of particular concern” for religious freedom violations. These countries include Iran, Burma, China, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan.…

Because of the title of this work we know that depicted are the Christ child carried by the Virgin Mary with a female saint embracing the child along with Saint John the Baptist as an infant to the right. Titian placed the figures in a pyramidal structure around the Christ Child so that one’s eye focuses on the Christ Child. In addition, although Saint John the Baptist is not physically in contact with the other three figures, his strong exchange glance at the child brings him together. Work seems balanced since the Virgin Mary, the female saint and Saint John the Baptist all look toward the Christ Child. In this painting, Tiziano Vecellio…

In this essay the pieces of art that are being compared and contrasted are, “Kritios Boy,” from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and “Dying Gaul,” from Capitolini in Rome, Italy. Kritios Boy was created during the Early Classical style period (480- 323 BCE). The Early Classical style is often referred to as Severe or Transitional, as it was known to bridge the gap between the Archaic and Classical. There is controversy as to weather the Kritios Boy belongs to the late Archaic period or to the Early Classical period, however the Kritios Boy displays many Early Classical attributes that seem to confirm it as Early Classical.…

At first glance, the Hercules and the Hydra sculpture is easy to pass by. Located in the outside sculpture garden it stands on a slightly elevated bronze platform, which stands on a bigger, more elevated concrete pedestal that also rests on a larger concrete pedestal that has four embedded lights, each on one corner. The viewing area is large and allows for the audience to view the sculpture up close and far, while still being able circumambulate around the statue at a variety of distances. Because of the vastness of the space around the sculpture, at first glance from the walkway, the sculpture does not seem to be a big piece. However, the closer the proximity towards the sculpture, the bigger the piece seems to get, appearing as if Hercules…
