Lady Macbeth Critical Analysis

‘Macbeth’, a passionate and intense drama written by William Shakespeare, explores notions of hierarchies, hunger for power and how a seemingly innocent person can become a villain. Set in Scotland and England, the play shows Macbeth, a nobleman of Scotland and Thane of Glamis become the Thane of Cawdor following a promising prophecy from three paranormal witches, and eventually becoming hungry for the title of King. In order to become King, Macbeth needs to kill King Duncan, Banquo and McDuff’s family, but finds this strength hard to manifest in the beginning of the play. Lady Macbeth, Macbeth’s manipulative and ambitious wife, questions Macbeth’s masculinity, coercing him into resulting to killing Duncan, Banquo and McDuff’s family. Macbeth’s actions were a result of an amount of internal and external factors, but in order to perform such actions, there needed to be some amount of strength behind the motivation to do so, and Lady Macbeth seemed to be the push for Macbeth to gain the strength to commit the atrocities that he did commit.

Without Lady Macbeth’s callous personality, it is questionable as to whether Macbeth would have carried out such barbarisms and killed Duncan, Banquo and McDuff’s family, and terrorising the kingdom. Through Shakespeare’s play that explores the development, the rise and the fall of a tyrant, the audience learns that Macbeth’s tyranny and brutality was only really given birth to by Lady Macbeth and her own evil, a trait that was unknown to Macbeth until his nobility and brut was questioned by his catastrophic
