Bureaucracy is seen in everyday life; they are imperative to society. Bureaucracies have made different impacts and “…tremendous strides in efficiency and productivity in the workplace through technology and the science of workplace management” (Larkin, 2015). This is a formal organization that helps accomplishes a goal or a task. Society would not be able to function properly without bureaucracy playing a role. Within a bureaucracy there are many different positions and elements that build the social standing. Each element has different people in charge of that role. Bureaucracy plays a role within everyone’s life if they realize it or not. One of the first characteristics of bureaucracy is specialization. Specialization is when an individual performs only one specialized task (Larkin, 2105). My position does not have a lot of tasks or goals to reach by the end of our shift, however, we do have more than one that we need to focus on. Even though I do several different tasks within my job position, there are a few positions throughout society that only have to focus on one task. During the weekend we are very slow, most of the time there really is not anything to do. That is when the student worker preform specialization, however, when need be we are able to do more than one task. I have been with the fitness for a little over a year now, however, I am considered at the lower end of the hierarchical authority structure. A hierarchical authority structure is when workers are arranged by a ranking status in which each worker is supervised by someone who is higher on the rank (Larkin, 2015). My manager Olivia has been with the fitness center for five years now, therefore, she has earned the status as manager within our ranking system. Workers who are a part of a bureaucracy need to interpret their role and have technical competence to fulfill what is expected out of them (Larkin, 2015). My manage holds standards for her workers and if we do not hold these standards then she will replace us with someone who will. Recently, someone got let go because she could not uphold the standards that was expected out of her during her shift. My manager will find someone to take her place, therefore, now we will have someone who can continue our bureaucracy the way it is supposed to be going. Student workers who have been there for a long period of time, for example myself, we are allowed to do homework at the desk. However, all, if not most, of our task must be complete before we start our homework. Technical competence is imperative for a business for succeed. A business can still be dysfunctional if they follow the bureaucracy
