Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Decent Essays
Choice “C” is the best answer. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic disease that entails painful, inflamed lesions in the axillary, inguinal, and anogenital areas, where apocrine sweat glands are present. Biopsy is rarely required, especially in well-developed lesions. Diagnosis of HS is clinical, and is based on the presence of typical lesions in a characteristic distribution, with recurrence (one accepted criterion is two recurrences over a period of 6 months)[1].

Choice “A” is not the best answer. Cellulitis is an infection involving the dermis and subcutaneous fat. Typically, there is an area of diffuse redness and swelling that develops over a couple of days. The borders of the area of redness in cellulitis are generally not sharp.

Given the patient’s significant family history of type II diabetes mellitus, her unremarkable metabolic profile laboratory test, and from the findings of her physical examination, it is likely that her AC is related to insulin resistance. She was educated about the treatment options, and she has decided to treat the condition with weight loss and monitoring for diabetes mellitus. She was instructed to refrain from scrubbing the areas with AC, for scrubbing can irritate her skin, making it thicker and darker. Hypospadias is a congenital anomaly with an incidence of 1/300 that is characterized by the opening of the external urethral meatus anywhere on the ventral surface of the penis other than its normal site at the tip of the glans penis (3). Hypospadias continues to be a challenging problem. The current operative concept in hypospadias surgery is based on a perfect single-stage repair of the malformation and should result in functional excellence and a cosmetically normal looking penis. A successful hypospadias repair includes a vertical slit-like glandular meatus, a conically shaped glans, a straight penis during erection, good skin coverage and a normal position of the scrotum in relation to the penis. These parameters reflect the expected…

Barrier products play an important role in effective and protective skin care regimes (Nix, 2006). Barrier creams are protective products, designed to form an occlusive barrier between the skin and noxious substances, not to be confused with emollients which moisturise the skin (Voegeli, 2008). Overenthusiastic application of some barrier creams may reduce the effectiveness of continence pads by clogging the absorbent layer and causing urine/loose stool to pool against the skin. This causes hyper-hydration and leads to possible moisture damage. However, if barrier creams are applied in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, this should not happen (Bolton, 2004).…
