Rules are everywhere. They are in sports, politics, nature, and even in social classes. However, the rules in the social classes are distinctive in that they are very seldom put to paper, but yet are still strictly adhered to at a subconscious level by every one of us. In fact, little did I know how much the hidden rules and customs of the middle class have influenced me. From small things such as how I perceive food to how humor is expressed and even how I view time itself, the hidden rules of the middle class affect my life and behavior in every way.

Nearly everything I do is with the future in mind. I am frequently thinking of how my present actions will benefit me, my fellow man, and/or some worthy cause. One good example occurred about a year ago when I started preparing for the latter portion of my life. I was speaking with my financial advisor at Edward Jones about what wise investments I should be making financially in the present. She spoke of how starting a Roth IRA (individual retirement account) would benefit me immensely in the future. She explained to me that it utilizes a seemingly miraculous formula in finances called compounding interest, which builds interest on not only the principle but also on its own interest. This would mean when I retire in my sixties, the compound interest in my account would have increased my principle by more than five thousand times! Practically speaking, a simple investment of several thousand dollars in my early twenties would easily break two million dollars by age sixty-five. So, seeing this as an excellent way to ensure enough money for retirement and greatly surpassing any Social Security money that I may or may not receive, I jumped on board. So whether it is food, humor, or how I make decisions, the fact that hidden socioeconomic rules from the middle influence me is plain. Even though I may have a mix of the hidden rules from all the classes in my life, most of them that affect me come from the middle class.
