Professors, tutors, and students in the college jointly weave an academic network to effectively pass the knowledge from the past to the future. As we all know, it’s difficult to study, research, and even do any things without instructions and lectures. In “Hidden Intellectualism”, one of the reasons for Graff claims that the “street smarts” for the pop culture beat out the “book smarts” is because the “street smarts” can be widely propagated, which book smarts can’t. (Graff 384). Graff points out that the function of colleges in nurturing intellectuals is passing the knowledges, which are in not interesting or popular enough to widely be propagated, to students. Thousands years ago, the appearance of college in the ancient Athens exactly was the need for the intellectuals have a place to communicate and pass their knowledge and ideas to their peers and students. Today, a more modern college can help the future intellectuals to learn knowledge and build their mind by means of the professional lectures quicker and better than any intellectuals in ancient Athens’ college. The internet helps people simply find knowledge from Wikipedia and discuss academic question on the forums. Thus, the academic forums and Wikipedia are supplemental evidences to prove that the Internet can do things which the college do. This idea confirms the function of the internet but ignores that quality of knowledge on the Internet is not valid. As we know neither academic forums nor Wikipedia belong in any colleges or universities or educational institution. Generally, most of the similar websites on the internets are open source and free to be edited. That means there isn’t any institution and supervision to promise the quality of information on the Internet. In addition, the convenience of online academic sources probably would attract the preparatory intellectuals who still don’t have strong research skills ignore to identify the knowledge, then quickly be submerged by the low-quality knowledge. In this case, the convenience cannot be a strong evidence to doubt the function of the college because the internet still can’t replace the college. In contrast, the situation tells the importance of the college in correctly pass the right knowledge to the future
