Hidden Figures Extra Credit Questions:
1. Choose a moment (or two) in the movie that stuck out to you. Explain what that moment was and why it stuck out to you. I was already emotional within the first 3 minutes of the movie. The film thoughtfully began with an impactful scene. It showed Katherine’s teachers encouraging her parents to move so that Katherine could begin studying at an institute with a full scholarship. Her teachers believed in her enough to gather money for her family. This reminded me of my personal experiences, although I was not as smart as Katherine! My parents moved countries so that I could live a better life, and have a better education. I was touched because I knew my parents would move mountains for me if I was Katherine. They also reacted with the same excitement when they learned I had earned a scholarship for University. My favorite high school teacher encouraged me to join UW-Bothell instead of staying at Cascadia College another year, and it was the best choice I have made post high school. Without his encouragement I would not be in this course at all. Overall this scene reminds me that it is important to surround yourself with people who believe in you, because it can change your life. What if the teachers had never met with Katherine's parents? She would have still been intelligent, but she wouldn't of had enough space to

In your opinion, why was the movie called Hidden Figures? Hint: who was hidden, and how were they hidden? At first I thought the hidden figures were in the math equations, since Katherine always talked about reading between the lines and finding the truth in the math. Now, my interpretation has changed since the hint is “who was hidden.” I would say the hidden figures are the main leading ladies themselves, as well as any other colored female who was underappreciated at this time. They were hidden by putting them all in a completely different building than where the white men who got to call the shots

Reflection # 1 The bus boycott was able to affect multiple people in the movie, for example Odessa, Miriam, and Mary Catherine. Firstly Odessa, who is the maid of Thompsons was affected by the bus boycott because she could not get to work on the bus anymore and this caused her to walk to work, which made her show up late to the Thompsons multiple times. Although what the boycott really did to her was bring out a feeling of change and meaning as shown towards the end when she holds hands with everyone at the carpool, although they are in a corner with many people surrounding them they all unify and together they show support for one another not giving in and leaving the car pool. This example from the movie is able to show how Odessa who in…

However, despite these points, there are still some that believe that Hidden Figures portrays segregation and people’s connections with it more accurately than The Help does. This indeed is a valid argument as Hidden Figures does give true, historical events, unlike The Help, and discusses struggles that were at some point faced by people in the real world. It also includes specific dates and locations at which events happen, which undoubtedly adds to the authenticity of the story. However, a major drawback of this book is that it does not give the perspectives of white Americans whatsoever, who often suffered from internal conflicts regarding whether or not they should support civil rights for blacks, as well as social conflicts such as the…

Going to watch Anatomy of Hate at 9 pm, I did not know what to expect. Once the film started playing though my gut reaction was disturbed. I could not understand how others could tear someone down based on skin color and religion. I have known what happened in Germany during world war 2, but somehow I have held out hope that there were no one treating people terribly in America. What disgusted me was seeing how parents portrayed views on their own children that were discriminatory and seeing how children would hold signs with words I never could imagine saying.…

Spirited Away uses the motif of food, which plays a crucial role in every transformation. The first transformation occurs when Chihiro’s parents devour the food they find in an empty park. Because the spirits perceived them as greedy consumers without appreciation, they transform the two consumers into pigs – a possible source of food themselves. The intemperate consumption of food resulted in a negative transformation, which began the plot for Chihiro to rescue her parents. The negative consequences from excessive consumption are also seen through the character No-Face, a spirit that eats others to gain their identities.…

One of the strengths in my movie assignment is giving the reader clear picture of the story without giving too much information. In my assignment one of the clear proofs given is “ ever since her father died, her stepmother has treated her like a raggedy servant girl.” In this proof I have given a clear understanding of how Cinderella’s stepmother has treated Cinderella without giving too much information. It is important to be clear when writing but not to have too much information because you do not want the reader to lose interest in what the story is about. Another one of my strengths in my movie assignment is having a good structure.…

Response Essay Baraka Allison Batley Communications Essentials – COMM1016 Vali Stone Wednesday, October 21, 2015 “Eggs, thousands of them, float by on a conveyor belt. Recently hatched chicks, dressed in yellow down, tumble from a conveyor belt down a chute onto another belt. Their eyes are wide, they look about amazed, their tiny wings flutter” (Roger Ebert, 2008). This is just one of the many images Mark Magidson and Ron Fricke use in their film Baraka. Their goal at first is to capture your attention and bring out your soft side and you think to yourself ‘how cute look at all the baby chicks’ and then they continue to what they are really doing with all these baby chickens.…

Reading what Olivia went through showed me that if she was so determined to go to college after everything that happened to her, no other student has the choice of giving up and not going to college. The way how Scott Braxton was with the student showed me how there are really great teachers and faculty who are willing to take part of their time to help you. Scott really helped his students out a lot. He would also make sure his students were getting well educated. Teachers like this are very well appreciated because they show their students by action that they are doing their job for the love they feel for their student and not the money.…

I felt that the energy and enthusiasm I brought to the stories helped make my performance believable and relatable.
