Hidden Figures is the story of three genius African American women who worked at NASA during 1961; their names were Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. These three women were the brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into space and helping him to arrive at the moon. While these women were helping America win the Space Race, they paved the way for many other minorities of women to gain many job opportunities and advocate for the minorities in America. They paved the way for many of the woman’s put into high positions today, they walked so we could run. These women stories are in the form of books and a movie that is available on multiple streaming platforms today, however there are some significant differences between the book and …show more content…
In the movie, we also got to see how these women learned how to program the IBM and how they overall became in charge of it. While the book doesn’t really cover the competition they faced with the IBM almost taking their jobs. However, in both the film and the book it does touch on the urgency of the Space Race, but in the movie, you see more of a concern from the whole country due to the movie being visual. The film portrays the slow progress and eventual success of the African American women computers in their respective fields. In addition, in the movie we see a scene from the childhood of Katherine Johnson. The film overall opens a whole new understanding of the experience due to the visual aspects of it. Overall, the movie brought the story of these women to life and provided a deeper understanding. In addition to it becoming a movie, their story would’ve reached even more audiences than the book may have. The movie brought the historical facts from the book and incorporated them into the movie and provided even more background information to go along with
