Dale start at Hickory was like a rebirthing for him personally and professionally. It gave him the chance to do things different this time around. Many of the townspeople did not want him their nor did they want changes being made to their basketball team. From the textbook Harvard Professor Barbra Kellerman said, "I take it as a given that we promote good leadership not by ignoring bad leadership, nor by presuming that it is immutable, but rather by attacking it as we would a disease that is always pernicious and sometimes deadly". I feel as though this is what was happening between the townspeople and Dale during the movie. Also I think that coach Dale knew from personal experience that people sometimes need a second chance. Meaning when he lost his previous job from losing control for a few seconds and hitting one of his players. Coach Dale did not need Shooter 's expertise but I felt as though he was trying to work at something larger. Then Dale proves Shooter 's value to the townspeople and the players (and to Shooter himself) by intentionally getting himself ejected from a game and forcing Shooter to show his coaching ability. Shooter does just that by diagramming a play by which Hickory wins the game on a last-second shot.
