Throughout history art has been used as a platform for artists to express their views, cultural concerns, and or to re-illustrate historical events in a modern scene. Samella S. Lewis used her platform, particularly in her piece entitled "The Preacher" as a medium in which she is applying the story of Jesus in a modern day context. Although the story of Jesus and his twelve disciples have been told for decades, it is often difficult for the preaching’s and teachings of Jesus to be applied in our present day in age. In Lewis’ 1943 painting entitled “The Preacher” (S. Lewis) a modern and more relatable scene of Jesus and his followers are depicted in which the viewers can find more relatable. Through the use of color, proportion, and symbolism, Lewis is able to still keep the historical context in her piece, but shows that though many African American pieces are not created we can still identify with the stories.…

rticle 5: Crucibles of Leadership Central Theme: Perspective determines whether a person fails or succeeds. Bennis and Thomas describe a crucible as a “point of deep self-reflection” that forces a person to “question who they [are] and what [matters] to them” (Bennis and Thomas, p.99). The authors gave several examples that displayed how different people used their unpleasant or enlightening experiences to become successful. The most important thing to understand is that any opportunity good or bad can be taken as an opportunity to grow or go. Critical Analysis: The authors did not give a formulaic response as to how to overcome or conquer a crucible; they solely gave examples of how successful people have overcome their personal crucibles.…

Morality must be fully understood by all people regardless of religion. All people must understand it exists because of evil, and last but not least, all learn about morality in their own way. The hate and bitterness of his “snarl” is the final implication as to how the Misfit feels about religion (O’Connor 645). Bellamy insists that the reason for the devilish message in the Misfit’s speech is due to his mission to play to role of the Anti-Christ. Bellamy asserts that, “The central message of the Misfit’s sermon, for a sermon is what his remarks amount to, is a familiar one in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction; there is no middle ground between absolute belief in Christ’s messianic fiction and a belief that like is nasty, brutish, and short,” (200). Katherine Feeley notes that the Misfit “embodies all reason and no faith,” which is the opposite of the faith-based personality of the grandmother (202). As Madison Jones remarks, the Misfit “may be haunted, at times tormented, by vision of Christ raising the dead, but he cannot believe it: he was not there.…

O Brother, Where Art Thou? was made in 2000 and is about three escaped prisoners on the hunt for some buried treasure. These men experience a great deal of adversity during their hunt including being returned to prison, a Ku Klux Klan mob, and a flood.
