Jonathan Edwards most effectively appeals to man’s emotion through alliteration and metaphors in order to persuade them to convert to christ. When Jonathan Edwards says “You are ten thousand times more abominable in his eyes” the author uses pathos and alliteration in order to emphasize the hate god has and it gives you a fearful emotion because you know you are in mercy of an angry god. The authors goal is to give you this emotion of fear to persuade you to convert your life over to christ. Jonathan Edwards uses exaggeration to emphasize the hate god has for the sinners and people who haven’t converted to christ. He wants you to understand that sinners are terrible people and have a reserved spot in hell by a merciless god.…

While watching George Carlin’s “Religion is Bulls**t”, I found he has viewpoints similar to Michael Himes’, meanwhile having opposite religious beliefs. In the video, George Carlin says jokingly that religion has persuaded people to think “there is an invisible man in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of everyday”. In Carlin’s point of view, he believes that there is someone named “God” who lives in the clouds and judges you everyday. However, Michael Himes insists that “God” is only a name, such as ‘“Charlie or Mary Ann”’(9), and that God is a complete and total mystery. Immediately following Carlin’s comment about God, he continues by saying “and if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire, smoke, burning, torture, and anguish where he will send you”(Carlin).…

Hell, as envisioned by Dante Aligheri in the 14th century, was classified into several circles, representing sins that fall into the themes of incontinence, violence, or fraud. Dante’s organization of The Inferno was meticulous and extremely detailed, to the point where some even labelled his Inferno as a “perfectly functioning bureaucracy” (V: Note 9-12) . While he was very successful and venerated for creating such a comprehensive idea of Hell, if his concept is the standard that must be lived up to in the modern, 22nd century that civilization lives in now, a majority of society would be condemned to the deepest circles of Hell. This influx of souls damned to the lowest part of Hell is due to the fact that some sins, that Dante’s society deemed the worst of the worst (such as those located in the spheres of fraud), have become commonplace in modern society, and have dawned a new, non-malicious connotation. Therefore, Dante’s 14th century version of the Inferno is outdated, and must be revised to reflect…

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10).
