The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the principal agency of the U.S. government responsible for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services. The HHS fulfills its mission by providing effective health and human services as well as fostering advances in medicine, public health, and social services. The department deals with almost a fourth of all federal government expenditures and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. All of the Department's programs are administered under 11 operating divisions composed of eight agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies.
