QP Rough Draft Many authors wrote because they want to express themselves, but H.G Wells wrote to expose something greater than himself. H.G. Wells was an 18th-19th century novelist, best known for the novels The Time Machine, War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man. From an early age, H.G. Wells, would read everything that came his way, such as the works of Jonathan Swift and Voltaire. His first novel, The Time Machine was an almost instant success and Wells would go on to create a multitude of science-fiction works. However, his later works focused mainly on social criticism and satire, and one of those later works happened to be War of the Worlds. The summary of the story is that an alien invasion ensued on earth and one man tries to reunite with his family. War of the Worlds was not simply an enjoyable, science-fiction novel. Wells intended for the novel to have meaning behind it, a purpose. He wanted to show the cruelty of Imperialism, Colonialism, Militarism. To be more specific, militarism was to represent the overall aggressiveness of the Imperialist states. Later on, in World War 1, militarism does cause many issues, primarily the German’s aggressive militarism. Germany was very cruel when it came to governing their colonies, and they would use brutal ways to achieve and sustain their colonies. “And before we judge of them too harshly, we must remember what ruthless and utter destruction our own species has wrought, not only upon animals, such as the vanished bison and dodo, but upon its inferior races.” (Wells, Chapter 1) Wells had already foreseen the evil that was going to come upon the human race and by the human race.
