Hey Devin: Poem Analysis

Decent Essays
Hey Devin,I agree with the things you talk about in your reflection of the story. Now that you said how at first this could have been a poem, I understand what you are saying. I also liked how the author talked about the workplace. That there are people that have serious problems, but sometimes no one is there to help. I didn’t like how if a person is going through something, they should have people to talk to. The boss tells the new employee that he should not be getting involved with the other employee’s problems. This is horrible because everyone needs help from someone once in a while. I also didn’t really think that much about when the author said “you can warm up your food in a microwave, but cannot cook your food in the microwave”, this

In the beginning of the poem, Bradstreet is sleeping during a calm and quiet night, and then suddenly, she wakes up by “thund’ring noise / And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice” (lines 3-4). She then sees that her house is burning in fire. Terrified, she cries out to God and prays so that God would help her. Her house eventually got entirely burned up, and Bradstreet ended up homeless, but she did not lose hope. She began to pull herself together and realized that God took away something that didn’t belong to her anyway.…

“Isolation is the worst possible counselor”(Unamuno). Emily Dickinson describes in her narrative poem,”From Blank to Blank,” a tormented person with loneliness and confinement, no matter what the narrator does to try to avoid it. The speaker admits defeat when she finds no way out of the darkness, because whatever she does makes no difference. Emily Dickinson’s use of meter, metaphors, and dashes in her poetry execute the purpose and theme of this poem.…

I felt as if the author or the narrator of this story only implied things that were seen along with the dialogue instead of describing what the characters felt. I had to use my own imagination to draw a conclusion on how the characters really felt. An example of this was the both characters describe the setting of the atmosphere. The nameless American man in the story puts a lot of emphasis on heat and oppression, while the young lady puts more emphasis on the lines in the hills and how they were bright and sunny. In my opinion, the author is setting the tone for a central underlining conflict between the characters.…

It goes to show how common emotional labor is among the work force. The author covered each topic of emotional labor very well and transitioned into the next topic smoothly. The only thing I would probably suggest would maybe try to incorporate either more examples, or maybe examples of situations from workers in fields that wouldn’t expect to experience emotional labor. I honestly think this book is a valuable piece. Living in a world today where crime and pain occurs daily, we have the men and women to thank who put their lives on the line for us, whether or not we are in danger.…

Once again this story mirrors life in general. When a worker reaches a certain age and leaves the only life they ever know, there is a feeling of emptiness and fear of the future. The world is different and the worker does not fit in anymore. Both authors use a depressing tone of their works, in the end however Tennyson ends on a note of hope.…

The first time I read this story my mind was spinning. The author left the reader with very little background information, which challenged the reader to dissect this piece and get to the bottom of the underlying meaning of this story. After reading it a second time I started to pick up on what this story actually represented and quite frankly I ended the story feeling upset. Ernest Hemingway portrayed the plot pessimistically.…

This story starts off with the writer telling a story about how mothers are using their children to get food and money. I like that he started this off like this because he shows how the life of a poor family used to be and in reality still is. He later go on to say that the mom instead of going out to work she rather have her children follow her and beg for money. I like how he goes on to say that if this is how the mom wants to take care of her children then when they grow up some will be theirs while other go and join the Spanish to fight and some maybe will get a job. I do think that he made a good point on that and he does use a little bit of satire so make it so that the reader does understand how serious this is but then they can kind of get a lough out of it.…

I have to say that even though this podcast was less interesting than the podcast we listened to last week this episode still had several insightful ideas. One of the innovative ideas that was said in the podcast that stood out to me the most is the fact that in the podcast it was said that boredom is actually a useful thing because it can put us in a state of mind that leads to creativity. The example that they give is based an experiment where volunteers were asked to think about a memory. It was found out that the more bored volunteers get when they are asked to think about a memory the more that it leads to nolgastic thinking. I wasn’t sure what nolgastic thinking meant, so I searched it up to gain a better understanding of it.…

In the poem “In The Dark” the poet describes putting on a fake smile to please the others around him while he suffers with severe depression. The theme of the poem is that you should not risk your own happiness to please others.
