Hexane And Thin Layer Chromatography

Decent Essays
The objective of the experiment is to find out the components in the medication. The medications that was chosen was Bayer, Tylenol, and Aleve. In order to do this experiment, a thin layer chromatography was used. The experiment used three different solutions which hexane, ethyl acetate, and 25% hexane an 75% ethyl acetate. For the first two TLC plates, hexane was used as the solution. Hexane proved to be a poor solvent and gave not very accurate results. The Rf values for the Hexane solution are shown below in the chart.

Before the lab began it was necessary to follow the lab safety rules by wearing a lab coat, googles, and gloves. There were nine unknown chemicals in nine plastic droppers labeled from one to nine sitting at the label tables. There were nine clean test tubes that were provided in order to mix the chemicals together. 10 drops of each unknown chemical was added when being mixed in test tube to perform a reaction.…

As the retention time of the standard cyclohexanol is 3.959 min, the sixth peak (4.012) of the student mixture, the closest peak, represents cyclohexanol. In the same way, the seventh peak (4.268) represents heptanal whose standard retention time is 4.170. The order of the retention times corresponds to their polarity; polar analyte interacts more strongly with polar columns. Cyclohexanol has one electronegative atom with only 6 carbons, but heptanal has one electronegative atom with 7 carbons. Therefore, cyclohexanol is relatively polar than…

The data that was obtained relates to how polar compounds adhere best to the TLC plate. The alcohol was determined to be the compound with the lower Rf value, therefore, indicating that the ester products were the compounds with a high Rf value. Furthermore, the conclusions that can be drawn from the data obtained, the spots in vial B indicate having a larger amount of esters in the products side than the starting material with the 1-phenylethanol, due to the esters being farther from the starting material in vial B,as well as, having a bigger and the intensity of the spots on the TLC plate; indicating (R)- HBTM in vial B reacted faster with 1-phenylethanol than vial A. Exact reaction conversion amounts are…

The small ranges of the acetaminophen, phenacetin, tartaric acid, and the unknown proves that they were pure while the mixture had a wide range which proves the effect of the impurity of a compound of temperature. The overall results were not as expected due to the calibration of the apparatus being off. The apparatus was reading temperatures lower than what they actually were leading to our data having lower melting points. The experiment would have had a better outcome if the equipment worked properly as well as having lower amounts of the compounds into the capillary tubes.…

In the discussion an explanation is given that reiterates and further explains how the results were calculated. The lab report is concluded by revealing any experimental errors that may have caused a flaw in the results. Background This experiment uses the concept that by calculating the retention factors of an unknown compound by using thin-layer chromatography, recording the melting points, and determining the solubility of that unknown compound, that it is possible to determine what that compound is by comparing it to known compounds that have similar retention factors, melting points, and solubility.…

The amino acid used in this lab that had the smallest Rf value was Glycine; Glycine had a retardation factor of 0.5. Based on the results collected, it can be concluded that Glycine is more polar than Alanine and Phenylalanine. The small retardation factor indicates that Glycine is more polar because it is more likely to form hydrogen bonds. As a result, Glycine was more attracted to the silica gel (stationary phase), moved slower, and covered a much smaller distance compared to the other two amino acids. Consequently, the Glycine amino acid solution did not travel fast in the mobile phase.…

Based on this data, a mobile phase composed of 80% ethyl acetate and 20% hexane was selected, for it provided a Rf value significantly greater than 0 for all analgesics and showed a decent amount of separation. This is vital in TLC because it is very difficult to differentiate chemicals unless separation is seen.…

Asymmetric synthesis is the reaction that produces one enantiomer in excess of the other. The melting obtained during the lab was 56-59 degree celsius, however literature melting point was not found online. Another group obtained a melting point of 44 degree celsius, which means a difference of ten degree celsius.…

The objective of this lab was to find a recrystallization solvent and to purify impure benzoic acid by recrystallization. To begin the experiment, a comparative Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was conducted with impure benzoic acid and pure benzoic acid. After removing the TLC plate from the TLC chamber a baseline was drawn and a UV light was used to view the spots and circles were drawn. Then, the TLC plate was stained in Iodine to see impurities.…

Also, when looking at the IR spectrum on can see that it I very erratic and ridged, which makes it difficult to interpret. The state of the IR spectrum could be due to the fact that the sample that was tested was impure. However, in order to indicate that the final product of aspirin is present on would look for a carbonyl peak at approximately 1700 cm-1. Although this is not present one can say that the initial product of salicylic acid in not present because the lack of a broad peak around 3300 cm-1, which would indicate an alcohol. As for the TLC, this helped determine that aspirin was produce because the initial TLC showed two dots, which indicated the starting materials.…

    Liquid Chromatography Lab

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a separation technique utilizing differences in distribution of compounds in two phases; called the stationary phase and the mobile phase. The stationary phase designates a thin layer created on the surface of fine particles and the mobile phase designates the liquid flowing over the particles. Under a certain dynamic condition, each component in a sample has a different distribution equilibrium depending upon the solubility in the phases and or molecular size. As a result, the components move at different speeds over the stationary phase and are thereby separated from each other. These components are separated from one another by the column packing that involves various chemical and/or physical interactions between their molecules and the packing particles.…
